JV Hangs On To
Defeat Seminole
The Kermit junior varsity
had to fight for their lives here
Thursday, to salvage a victory
over an aroused Seminole JV.
Coach Waymond Griggs’ squad
had built a 29-6 halftime lead
and had increased it to 36-6
early in the third quarter.
With a tremendous passing
attack, the visitors roared back
to score 28 straight points and
finally went down, 36-34.
Seminole put the ball in the air
35 times and compel ted 18 for
242 yards. Kermit picked off
two throws.
In the first half, Kermit’s
offensive machine ran
smoothly and the defense was
superb, as they ran up 29
points and held Seminole
scoreless until just seconds
before the half.
The last half was totally
different, as Seminole found
the range in their aerial game
and picked the Kermit defense
to pieces for 28 points.
Following their last
touchdown and trailing by
two, the visitors tried an onside
kick, but an alert Kermit
frontline player fell on the ball
at the Seminole 46.
Quarterback Georgie Mitchell
fell on the ball until time ran
out, to preserve the win.
Kermit scored in just four
plays after taking the initial
kickoff. Starting from their 32,
Wendell Walker carried for 12,
Bobby Clark added two,
Walker swept right end for 22,
then Jerry Fuqua followed the
same path, got good blocking
and went all the way, 44 yards,
to a touchdown. L. D. Green
booted the extra point for a
7-0 lead.
Early in the second period,
Kermit moved 64 yards for
their second score. Clark
picked up 40 yards in six
carries during the drive, with
Walker crashing off right tackle
for the score. Kermit used a
trick play, with almost the
entire team lined up to the left,
to tally the two-point
conversion.
In the middle of the second
quarter, following a punt,
Kermit drove 43 yards to
another score. Walker carried
three times for 27 yards and
the payoff was a 16-yard TD
pass from Mitchell to Billy
Mercer, who was all alone.
Green’s kick made the score
22-0.
Seminole made their best
move to this point, driving
from their 32 to the Kermit
30. However, Clark stepped in
front of a pass to the left flat,
gathered in the ball and outran
the opposition to the goal, 75
yards away. Green again
converted for a 29-0 margin.
The visitors scored with
seconds left in the half, after
driving 59 yards. Big play in
the drive was a pass that was
tipped in the air and then
caught at the Kermit two-yard
line. They scored on the next
play, but failed to convert. The
half was over two plays later,
with Kermit leading 29-6.
Ronny Woods picked off a
Seminole pass early in the third
period to set Kermit in gear at
their opponents’ 31. After an
incomplete pass, Walker went

off his right tackle, reversed his
field twice and raced all the
way for another Kermit
touchdown. After a five-yard
penalty, Green added the extra
point for a 36-6 lead.
Seminole then started their
big push, with one TD coming
on a four-yard pass, after
driving 48 yards. The
conversion attempt was no
good and the score was 36-12.
Late in the third, Seminole
held at their 35 and began a
push for another score. Two
passes picked up 28 yards, with
the visitors pushing over from
the two. The two-pointer was
good and Kermit led 36-20.
A Kermit fumble gave
Seminole their next
opportunity two plays later,
with the ball changing hands at
the Kermit 22. A pass of 14
yards and another for eight
covered the distance and the
extra point try failed, to leave
the score at 36-26.
Kermit took the kickoff to
the Seminole 35, before Walker
punted to the Seminole three.
Three running plays
advanced the ball to the 29,
where a pass was completed for
67 yards. The receiver was
finally knocked out of bounds
at the Kermit four-yard line.
Two running plays covered the
distance and the conversion
was good, to bring the
Seminole team within range at
36-34.
Kermit recovered the onside
kick to run out the clock.
Walker was the busiest ball
carrier for Kermit with 15
carries for 119 yards. Fuqua
toted 10 times for 97 yards
and Clark had 42 yards in 10
carries.
Seminole picked up 21 first
downs, with Kermit getting 14.

TOWN DECISIONS
TAKE TIME
Mayor of Kettering, Ohio,
Charles Horn expected an
extensive wave of cultural
exchange and much goodwill
to follow the choosing Of
Steyr, Australia, as the
community’s sister city.
When nothing happened
after some time, Horn called
Josef Fellinger, burgomaster of
Steyr, by transoceanic
telephone to find out just what
was happening.
Fellinger told the Ohio
mayor that decisions take
awhile in Steyr. It seems aji
exchange had to be cleared by
the town’s 46-member council
which meets only once every
three months.
