Is There Any Hope?
I am not an alarmist, but I
am convinced that our country
is in serious trouble.
When I stop for a moment
and look around me, I feel
myself caught by several deep,
genuine emotions.
First, I feel fear. I’m not
ready to press the panic
button, but I feel a deep, deep
uneasiness about the future.
Crime, like a huge tidal wave, is
engulfing us. Those public
officials charged with the
responsibility of making and
enforcing law and order
seemed to be powerless. No
section of our nation is safe
from the evergrowing epidemic
of rape, robbery, assault,
murder, theft and property
destruction. Civil disobedience
has become a disease.
Disrespect for law has reached
into our elementary schools.
Riots and rebellions are all
about us. Both the forces of
internal decay and the forces
of external ruin are creating
this anxiety which I feel.
Second, I am confused. I am
confused about the recent laws
and rulings which pjrotect the
“rights” of criminals and
entirely ignores the victim. I
am confused about putting
“God” into our Pledge of
Allegiance and taking prayer
out of our* schools. I am
confused about our sudden'
repudiation of religion since
our nation and its form of
government was born in the
hearts and souls of Christian
people.
Third, I am disturbed. I'm'
disturbed about the decay and
the war being waged against
the home. Marriage is a
mockery. Sex has become our
daily diet. Morality is out and
situation ethics are in. Divorce
is a fad. Men and women
openly live together in adultery
and fornication. The
instructions given for marriage
in the Bible are ignored by
both our courts and our
communities. I’m disturbed
about our national attitude
toward morality as a whole.
The erotic revolution has given
the “Playboy” philosophy
respectability. Smut and
pornography is now “art” and
the average magazine which
seethes with filthy language,
back-ally illustrations, and
toilet-wall writing is suddenly
classic literature (with
redeeming social good, no less).
I’m disturbed that there is so
little we can do about it. It
seems to be utterly impossible
i: I
by REV. GENE JORGENSON
to stop the filth being shown
on the movie screens; the crud
that comes into our homes
through television; and-the dirt
being distributed through
print.
There is J final emotion that
grips me. I am angry. I am
angry about* having to live in a
sick.1 soeictY with its influence ■
upon-- rfi‘yxchildrdn. I’m angry"
about having to pay through
the nose to support a bunch of
human parasites. I’m angry
about the i.drunks, addicts,
perverts and spineless public
officials who drain my
finances, threaten my safety,
and live as^ leeches off decent,
honest, hard-working people.
I’m angry about the
“Christians” who thumb their
noses at God and drag the
name of Jesus into the filth
and human lust and depraved
activities.
All these emotions combine
to create in me a feeling of
hopelessness. I can see the
gradual fall of this great
country, and I can’t see any
human way to stop our
landslide to total collapse. We
have tried legislation,
education, social action,
economics and even war. We
have seen national programs,
state programs and local
programs fail with equal
powerlessness.
Is there any hope? Is there a
way out? There is a way! There
is only one way! That one way
is the way of God.
In the Psalms David said,
“Why art thou cast down, O
my soul? Why art thou
disquieted within me? Hope
thou in God!” There was a
time when this nation believed
God. There was a time when
this nation honored God.
There was a time when this
nation worshipped God. There
was a time when the business
communities of our cities not
only honored God by closing
on the Lord's-Dayy but ‘they
honored Him by being faithful
in worship, prayer and by
setting examples in
righteousness. There was a time
when the wage-earner gave God
the credit for his ability and
health," and honored God with
both his substance and his
time. There was a time when
American homes were houses
of worship; where the Bible
was read; where prayer and
thanksgiving was a daily joy;
where family problems were
taken to God for direction and
guidance. There was a time
when governors and presidents
worshipped God because He
was God instead of using
“religion” as a means of
securing votes. There was a
time when the children and
youth saw righteousness in the
majority and were confident
that what they saw was real.
Filthy minds and mouths
will run on unabated as long as
we have filthy hearts.
Legislation, education or social
action cannot change the heart.
Only God can change a heart.
Our nation needs a “heart”
transplant, and only the Great
Physician can do that. He, and
He alone is our hope.
