Billies Take Two Games From Tigers
As Conference Season Nears Finish
Sideline Shots
Texas Conference basketball is
entering the final stretches but It
seems that there is something of
a muddle developing. T. W. C. was
bur favorite as well as being the
choice of many others but it seems
that there are troubles developing.
Not in percentages either. The
Rams have played eight games and
they have won those eight games.
However it takes three more than
the Rams have scheduled to earn
the conference crown. The prob-
lem is "Who will play the sharp-
shooting Rams?" It's a cinch that
none of the teams that have been
played by the Rams up to this
time are willing to tackle them
again.
A. C. C.'s Wildcats are the top
contenders if the Rams are drop-
ped from the list. They have a
record of seven and one. Others
of the conference members are
scattered down to the bottom and
are practically out of the running.
So if Abilene's entries in the loop
fail to give the Rams a chance to
catch the crown there's bound to
be a little tangle somewhere.
Spring training for the Hill Bil-
lies is scheduled to open on March
7. There is an abundance of ma-
terial on hand it is reported and
the general opinion is that the
boys will get to work under the
direction of "Shorty" Ransom the
new coach. Ramsom has had some
top teams in Baker and hopes are
high here and in town that he
will turn up with repeaters.
"Rejuvenated" seems to be the
title for the Hill Billies now. They
have ben showing the stuff during
the past three games. Handed the
Rams quite a scare in Fort Worth.
Came home and handed the Tigers
from Et. Edward's a double licking
on the Billie courts. The only re-
gret is that the boys didn't get
started sooner in the season. Any-
way there's a chance of improving
the standing to some extent.
Tennis seems to have gone on a
blursre for a few days. Rain isn't
so hot for such. games. Anyway
It is time for action on the courts
and there will probably be plenty
as soon as the weather clears. A
new bracket is being arranged and
matches will be played off as soon
as possible after it has been com-
pleted. Ping-pong is on the up-and-up
however. In spite of the fact that
the sophs have dropped the idea
of sponsoring a tournament there
Is plenty of action in the recreation
room. Rain and cold weather are
aids to this sport.
Sporting blood came to the top
during the recent elections for the
ugliest man on the campus. Seems

Daniel Baker's Hill Billies gained
a double decision over the St.
Edward's Tigers in a series of two
games played on the Baker court
the first of the week. The win
placed the Billies in a tie with the
Tigers for fifth place in the league
standing.
Tigers gained the lead at the
start of the first game. The score
stayed close throughout the game
with the Billies in the lead until
shortly before the end of the final
period. A scoring attack started
by the Tigers ended one point short
of the Billies total.
In the second tilt the Billies
started strong and maintained the
lead throughout the game. Both
teams showed marked improve-
ment over the ragged play of the
previous night. Fouls were fre-
quent with five men leaving the
game by that route. Final score
in the conflict was 54-40.
In both games Horace Wohlford
Billie center played stellar ball to
add in the attack of the Billies.
Oscar Wilhelm was one of the
stars of the first night's contest.
Billie scorers ganged up on the
Tigers in the second fray and out
pointed the visitors on every oc-
casion. Wohlford Bratton Stew-
art and Payne came in for their
share of the points. Bratton miss-
ing from the line-up in the first
encounter added to the spirit of the
Billies in the second game.
Fast passing of the Tigers and
the spirit of their play left the
Billies somewhat stunned on sever-
al occasions and the antics of the
comedians on both teams added to
the spice of the game so far as
most of the spectators were con-
cerned. Glenn Frazier Texas A. & I.
served as referee for both games.

Gene Taylor Elected
Tarelton Coach
Gene Taylor Hill Billie coach
who will complete four years of
work at Daniel Baker when his
resignation becomes effective on
July 1 has been named to the posi-
tion of football coach at John Tar-
leton Agricultural College Stephen-
vllle.
Taylor succeeds "Chock" San-
ders former Plawboy coach whose
resignation has been accepted by
the school officials.
Taylor resigned his position at
Daniel Baker during the Christmas
holidays. He was in his fourth
year of coaching at the school.
Since the selection of the new
coach for next season Taylor has
spent his time in working with the
members of the basketball squad
of the school. He is to be suc-
ceeded at Daniel Baker by I. A.
"Shorty" Ransom who coached
the Hill Billie athletics ten years
ago.

that the Freshmen have finally won
something even though they had
three entries. Most of the frosh
were managed by uppers but that
didn't seem to help matters much.
A roungh and tough footballer won
the title so maybe it's all right
after all.
What about track? Will the Bil-
lies have any entries in the Texas
Conference meets? Seems that
there is plenty of good material in
the school and that should be made
Into something that will help the
school along.

the situation. He says that maybe
the managers should have gone
home and looked in mirrors before
they started looking for likely can-

But what do the students think?
How many of them know what has
been happening anyway? There
was a lot of laughter much ap-
plause or applesauce and not
much more. The students who
were not managing a stable of
ugly men didn't know what was
going on so they didn't care to
think. So that's that. Hugh is
rather ugly all have to admit now.

For Crown May Go

Texas Wesleyan retains tha basket-ball
lead. That's the news Inst
there are clouds on the horlaom fat
the Rams. It seems that they will
be forced to match three mora con-
ference games if they waat to stay
in the running for the champion-
ship this year. The boys have a
perfect conference record but
there are still conference rulings
to keep them out of their first
Texas Conference crown.
On top of all that the boys have
their troubles. A couple of their
stars are slated for the sidelines
one through illness and the other
through withdrawal from school.
All of which makes basketball In
T. W. C. a nice subject for conver-
sation. And while there is all the rum-
pus In Fort Worth the Abilene
Christian Wildcats are raising their
own little screech. They have drop-
ped one game in their conference
race and they have won seven.
Latest was a victory in the intra-
city game between the Cats ami
the McMurry Indians. Their vic-
tory over the Indians placed the
Redskins in third place and prac-
tically ruined their chances to
finish at the top. Trinity manages
to stay in the top division with a
record of six wins and three losses.
Daniel Baker's double win over
the Tigers from St. Edward's
throws the Billies Into a tie for the
fifth place. And it's the Tigers who
are fighting for the place. Both
teams have won four games and
dropped seven.
On the bottom of the list are
found a couple of other conference
contenders. There are two teams
who have not even enjoyed the
thrill of a victory. Southwestern
and Austin College are fighting to
hold the cellar slot. Southwestern
has lost seven; Austin eight
