An unusually enthusiastic assemb-

attended the semi-annual meeting of
the Rio Grande Valley Federation of
Women’s Clubs which met at Mc-
Allen Tuesday, December 9.
There were thirty-nine Valley clubs
represented by the three hundred
women present, eighty-six of whom
were delegates. .
The federation had the great honor
©f having as their guests the follow
prominent club women: Mrs. Henry
Redmond of Corpus Christi, State
President; Mrs. G. A. Scott of Cor-
pus Christi, former State President;
Mrs. Wheeler Pettus, Fifth District
President; Mrs. Clara Driscoll Sevier
of San Antonio; Mrs. T. H. Herron
and Mrs. Ingram of Alabama and
Mrs. Pickier of South Dakota.
Activities were held at the First
Baptist Church which was artistical-
ly decorated in hanging Spanish
moss and gorgeous red poinnsettias.
Mrs. G. C. Prichard of Edinburg,
presided over the meeting in the ab-
sence of the president, Mrs. J. A.
Card of Mission.
The program opened with invoca-
tion by Rev. George Balch of McAl-
len, followed by the “Salute to the
Flag,” led by Lola Ruth Villers.
Following the singing of the “Star
Spangled Banner,” Mrs. A. A. Hughes
of McAllen gave the address of wel-
come to which a response was given
by Mrs. E. Owen Scott of Rio Grande
City.
Mrs. H. O. Schaleben of Edinburg
read the minutes and gave the treas-
urer’s report.
The speakers for the day were

Splendid chorus numbers were giv-
en by representatives from the music
clubs of the Valley under the direc-
tion of Miss Flora Todd of San Be-
nito with Mrs. Lane at the piano.
The McAllen High School Glee
Club girls quite lovely in their blue
bonnets, sang “Texas, Pride of the
South,” the accobpanyment being
played by a boy of about twelve
years of age.
Mrs. Roser of La Feria gave sev-
eral appreciated readings accompa-
nie by Mrs. Vigness of La Feria, on
the piano.
A delightful number on the pro-
gram and a surprise to the majority
of those present was the presenta-
tion of a Spanish maiden of 17
years of age, of Brownsville, by
Miss Julia Montgomery who had dis-
overed that she possessed a voice of
musical beauty and charm, having
had no training whatever. The
maidens name is Cornelia Anzaldua,
She sang “I hear a Thrash at Eve”
and responded to a hearty encore.
Miss Montgomery stated .that Mary
Carson and her brother of Houston
who heard her sing are going to give
her a musical education.
For the first time a “Better Home
Work” has been inaugurated. The
Federation has endorsed this move-
ment and the Valley will observe
“Better Home Week” in May from
the 10th to 17th.
A splendid report was given in re-
gard to -the Educational Loan Fund.
At present there is a balance of
$1,000.00.
Miss Beth Norris of San Benito is
attending Baylor College at Belton,
and Miss Lorene Noe of Rio Hondo
is in school at San Marcos, having
taken advantage of the Loan Fund.
It was decided that in the future
Club reports would be given annual-
ly, in May, to be limited to two min-
utes.
An election of officers was held as
follows: president, Mrs. Volney Tay-
lor, Brownsville; first vice-president,

the day served a splendid dinner at
the noon hour.
