Taping the memoirs of senior
citizens who have a Van Zandt
County history is being done on a
regular basis. If you know anyone
who is willing to share their ex
perience of the past and has a good
memory, please contact the Van
Zandt County Library and ask for
Mary Wages. It is important that we
get these stories for future use. They
will be kept on file at the library.

CANTON —City of Canton resi-
dents will get a break on summer
water rates during the months of Ju-
ly. August and September. The
break will only be applied to resi-
dents using more than 20,000
gallons.
The current (6 for the first 5,000
gallons, and $1.15 per 1,000 gallons
after the initial 5,000 gallons will re-
main in force; however, the $1.15
rate will drop to 90 cems per 1,000
after 20,000 gallons are used.
These rates will only apply to re-
sidential meters of customers who
live inside the city limits. It will not
apply to commercial meters or those
living outside the city limits.
Arnold Paul met with the council
to discuss the “Main Street Project."
Paul recently attended a conference
in Hillsboro on the project and re-
ported on what he had learned.
It is not a govemmem- funded
program, but more or less a cham
her of commerce type project in con
junction with the Texas Historical
Commission, Paul said.
It takes someone to organize mer-
chants in a way that promotes down-
town activities to help keep the
downtown area alive, he continued.
In a lot of areas, Paul said the
banks are in full cooperation and set
aside funds that can be used for low
interest financing.
Paul mentioned the possibility of
some kind of farmers' market down
town which could attract people to
that particular area.
A spokesperson for the chamber
present at the meeting said she felt
the chamber would be interested in
sending a representative along with
the a representative from the city to
meet with authorities in Austin to
see if the project would be feasible
for Canton.
The council discussed the First
Monday improvements at length,
and Gerald Turner, the city secre
tary. displayed maps showing where
the improvements have been made.
