Lucy Smith of Weslaco was a vis-
itor in Mercedes Sunday.
Newell Waters returned from San
Antonio where he went on business.
B. G. Whitehead of Pharr was a
business visitor in Mercedes the last
of the week.
Mrs. H. Carlisle and mother, Mrs.
Shouse spent Saturday afternoon in
Brownsville.
Shelly Collier left Monday for San
Antonio on a business trip. He made
the trip by car.
Mrs. Margaret King and sister,
Mrs. Finley were Brownsville shop-
pers Saturday.
Lorraine Hankins and Virginia
Macune of Pharr were guests of Ruth
Wood last week.
Mrs. H. E. Bennett and Mrs. Henry
Menton were Edinburg and McAllen
visitors Saturday.

home from a two weeks visit at the
home of her cousin Mrs. L. A. Kemp

Miss Ruth Wood attended a party
in Pharr Monday night given by
Linela Macune in honor of a guest
from Bay City.
Miss Margaret Vah Cleve who is
visiting Mrs. Chas. Bull plans to
spend a month in Mercedes as the
guest of her aunt.
Mr. and Mrs. John Herndo.n nad
Mrs. Herndon, Sr. will leave Thurs-
day for Houston by car where they
will spend a week.
Miss Angela Murray is expected
home the last of the week from Hous-
ton. She will spend the week end
..at her home here.
Miss Ruth Finck of San Antonio
arrived Sunday from San Antonio to
make a two weeks visit at the home
of Mrs. Albert Wright.
Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Howze and two
daughters returned Friday from a
two weeks trip to Corpus Christi,
Junction and other points.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Roman and
children left the last of the week for
a two weeks vacation trip to the
northern part of the state.

by Mrs. Margaret Ragland Saturday.
Mrs. Amzi Stuart and Mrs. Harry
Rouse and son are expected home the
last of the week from an extended
j trip through Illinois, Arkansas and

Mrs. Minnie Moore Myers spent the
week end with Miss Mary Anne
Makens and Daisy Martin. She left
Monday for Austin where she will join
her little son and spend the summer.
Mrs. Orlou Ferguson and grand-
sons Hoyt and Ferguson left Wednes-
day morning for Colorado where they
will spend two weeks after which
they will go to Beaumont for a
month.
J. C. Karle is leaving the first of
next week for an extended vacation
trip throughout West Texas, Colo-
rado, Oklahoma, New- Mexico and
other points. He plans to be gone
about a month or six weeks.

Word hase been received from Miss
Lillian Steels, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. A. L. Steele formerly of Merce-
des but now of Weatherford, Texas,
of her graduation at Weatherford
College where she received the high-
est honors of her class. Miss Steele
plans to enter the University of Texas j
next fall.
Announcements have been received
in the city of the marriage of Charles
Rochard Bentley to Miss Virginia
Ward, which took place in California
at the home of the bride. Mrs. Bent-
ley was a former teacher in the Mc-
Allen high school. Mr. Bentley was
manager of the National Service Sta-
tion during his stay in Mercedes. The
couple will make their home in south-
ern Florida where Mr. Bentley is
connected with a real estate firm.
Twin girls arrived at the Ben
Schwartz home Saturday.
Mrs. Louis Gates has gone to join
her husband at Victoria, Texas.
R. C. Waters of Weslaco was in the
city on business Tuesday morning.
John T. Lomax of San Benito was
a business visitor in Mercedes Tues-
day.
Monk Wilson has returned from a
business trip to San Antonio and oth-
er points.

D. W. Walker and John McDonald
drove to Corpus Christi Wednesday
where they attended the Storage
men’s convention held there. They
returned to Mercedes Saturday. Mr.
Walker states that the cotton looks
unusually good around Corpus Christi
and the people of that section are
looking forward to a very good yield.
W. F. Shaw of the American Co.
has been in Austin the past week on
business connected with the applica-
tion before the State Board of Water
Engineers for permission to divert
water from the river for the irriga-
tion of 25,000 acres just west of Mis-
sion. The application was filed by
Marvin Goodwin and others.

J. W. Wallingford of Mt. Carmel,
Kentucky, spent several days in Mer-
cedes the first of the week visiting
Miss Mildred Shekell and her broth-
er W. Shekell. The friendship of the
Wallingford and Shekell families
dates back to many years ago when
both were residents in Mt. Carmel,
Kentucky.
