“Shame on the town. Where are
they?"
He had earlier said that it was
"abcolutely mandatory that every
person who is interested in our
children's education attend the
meeting."
However, despite front page ar-
ticles the past two weeks in the
Chronicle promoting the meeting,
very few people showed up to tour
the schools and help the committee
decide how to solve the over-
crowding problems.
Bullman said, "We feel the input
of the public is very important to
help us know what to do. We can't
keep sticking our heads in the sand.
We know there arc problems which
have to be solved, and we are hoping
to find a solution."
Bullman added. "Apparently,
people don t want to get involved
because it will cost them more
money if we pass a bond issue But if
we don t provide our children with a
good education, they will not be
good leaders in the future-and
remember, these students are going
to be our leaders someday "After a
brief tour of the three school cam
puses, the small group held jl
lengthy discussion session, during
which several suggestions were made
concerning ways to inform the
public of the school s needs.
Frank Hollandsworth. one of the
committee members, said. "We
must educate the people that there s
a need A lot of people think the
schools are just throwing the tax
payers' money away. It is going to
take a strong effort to convince the
people to get behind a bond issue to
build more classrooms
A question was asked as to what
will happen if the schools can't meet
state requirements.
Superintendent Dr. Dennis Town
send replied, "Well be checked by
the state and put on an advised
status if we are not meeting the re
quirements. Then, we would be
checked again and put on a proba
lion status.
"After that, a master monitor
would come to our school district
and have the authority to veto
anything the superintendent or
school board says He would have
the power to dose the school if he
feels that is necessary," Townsend
noted
Townsend added. "We re just dig
ging our hole a little deeper when wc
don t pass a bond issue. Eventually,
we won't be able to deal with the
growth problem if we don't get more
classroom space."
Glynn Ellis, another member of
the committee, asked how everyone
feels about possible consolidation
with Edgewood. which is facing the
same problems as Wills Point
Townsend said there is a strong
push in the state legislature for
smaller schools to consolidate, and
added. "'1 hat is not going to die out
in the future. A lot of smaller
schools will be forced to
consolidate."
Townsend said consolidation with
Edgewood would provide better
facilities, but would not be a cheap
route to solving the problems the
two schools face
Ellis said. "We need a new high
school that s the only way to solve
the problem over a long period of
time But selling that to the public is
going to be something else."
Charles Curtis noted, "We are
hoping for the committee to tell us
what you want us to do. Do you want
a short term solution or a long

range solution? We can’t decide
what to do until we know which way
the community wants us to go.”
Ray Sewell commented.
"Everyone knows the need is here for
more classrooms. Do we build a new
high school or do we buy more por
table buildings? It’s going to take a
strong selling job from the ad
ministration on down to get a bond
issue approved."
Committee member Ron Clower
said. "We have to decide what to do
and present it to the public.”
Bullman noted that the commit-
tee might put a newsletter in retail
stores around the city for merchants
to hand out to customers, outlining
the school s needs.
He said the Boy Scouts also might
get involved by handing out flyers on
street corners or going door to door.
He also said he felt the local chur
ches could play a big role in getting
the public involved.
"The main thing is that we have
got to make the public aware of the
problems and get everyone working
with us to Find a solution. Bullman
said.
Townsend pointed out that the
school board is wanting recommen
dations from the committee to help
the trustees decide which way to go.
"You must First establish what
needs to be done." Townsend said,
"and then determine how to ac-
complish the necessary goals."
Committee member DcWitt Deen
pointed out that the committee has
now met three times and still has not
reached any kind of decision as to
what it wants to recommend to the
school board
"We need the roofs repaired
walls put in the open areas, a
cafeteria for the high school, and
more classrooms." he noted "We
need to decide what has to be done
first and recommend something to
the school board so they can get
started
Bullman replied. "That's what we
are aiming for to make some deci
sions soon."
Bullman said the committee
would meet again soon to try to
come up with some recommenda
tions for the st hool board hut no
definite date was set for another
meeting
