Runners compete
in Fun Fest Run
CANTON — Thirty three runners
from all over Texas competed in the
first annual Free State Fun Fest 10 K
Run through the streets of Canton
early Monday morning.
Howard Richardson, 30, of Dallas
was the first runner to cross the
finish line with an overall time of
34.13 in the race (6.2 miles). Robin
Powell, 23. of Lubbock was second
overall with a time of 35.43, and
Greg Brown, 20, of Canton was
third with a time of 36.44.
Terri Marler, 29. of Dallas, the
only woman in the race, finished
29th with a time of 55.57.
Runners were given first, second

In the male 17 29 age group,
Robin Powell. 23, of Lubbock, plac-
ed first with a time of 35.43; Greg

with a time of 36.44; and Jerry B
Terry, 27, of Lindale, was third with
a time of 43.36.
Paul Filkil, 30. of Port Arthur,
placed first in the 30 39 age division
with a time of 36.47. Rick Bates. 32,
of Garland was second with 37.16
and Robert Langham. 32. of Tyler
was third with 39 18
In the 40 49 age division. Cliff
Warner. 46. of Lewisville was first
with a time of 41.11; Tom Baum.
48, of Kaufman was second with a
time of 49.11; and jack Neill. 41, of
Tyler was third with 51.08.
Will Samples, 57, of Dallas placed
first in the 50 and over age division
with a time of 42 17 in the run.
Charles Ogilvie, 67, of Ben
Wheeler, posted a time of 44 23 to
gain second place, and Murry
Farsvall, 53, of Dallas was third with
a time of 48 02.
Winners in the "Run for Fun
event held Monday morning were
Scott Harrell of Canton, first in the
8-12-year old division; Alan Teague
of Brownsboro first in the 17-25 age
division; and Henry Lewis of Can-
ton, first in the 35 and over division
Seven graduates
Seven students from Van Zandt
County were among 562 who
graduated from East Texas State
University May 11.
They were Michael Erby Abbott,
MS, Daniel Dwayne Cockerham,
BS. Carol Elaine Keahey, BS. and
Amy Maurine Pool, BS, ail of Can-
ton; Stephen Paul Kinney, BBA, of
Edgewood; and Dave R.

The closest to Ivy and Nannie's
hearts were their five children, 17
grandchildren and now 17 greats.
They are:
Evelyn (1915- ). who taught her
first school at Pine Bluff, where Ivy
taught his first, a 17-year teacher, a
church leader and a writer, married
Guy Crow and now lives in Edom.
Their children are Joe Jimmy
(1942-76), Edom; Thomas
Reginald (1947- ), Tyler, married
Maureen Johnson, has one son,
Reggy Ray (1976- ), and David
Odelle (1949- ), Edom, an engineer,
married Barbara Burtnet, has three
children: Doug Owen (1968 ).
Thomas Luther (1973 ) and Jean
nie Marie (1976 ).
Ivy Truitt (1917- ). after Lon
Morris, S.M.U. (BS degree) and
WW II (Air Force, 29th Statistical
Control Unit, Central Pacific Com
mand), he worked in Brownsboro
bank, president of First National
Bank of Duncanville, and in 1962,
he bought the Ben Wheeler Bank,
the bank where his father started his
career
Truitt, who is active in Van Zandt
County activities, married Johnnie
Lee Killingsworth, and they have
two daughters: Pamela Jean (1945-
). who teaches at LaPoynor, married
Randal Clayton, and has three
children; Julie Marie, Gina Lee and
Chet Randal; and Athena Nan
(1955- ), who teaches at Tyler
Junior College, married Randal
Russell, and has one son. Cary.
Margye Marie (1920- ), after Lon
Morris College, Baylor, a world
traveler, married Phillip Neswitz
and resides in Pebble Beach, Cali
fomia, where she is society page
editor, docent, and active in drama
(director, Monterey Peninsula
Shakespeare Festival).
Her children are Ivy Voctor
Thompson (1943- ), married Joyce,
Pacific Grove, California; Rhonda
Ruth (1948- ). teacher, married
John Luongo, Newark, California;
and Dennis (1948 '50).
Gwin Morris, DDS, (1925- ), after
WWII (US Air Force, South Pacific
and Japan, 1943-’46), married
Callie Frances Tidmore, attended
East Texas State (BS-1951) and Uni
versity of Texas Dental School
(DDS-1955). Opened his dental of
fice in Duncanville, two years. Oak
Cliff, 18 years, organized First
National Bank of Duncanville, on
school board, active in all civic af-
fairs. moved office to Malakoff,
1975, where he resides on Cedar
Creek Lake
Their five children are Donna
Lynn (1948 ), married Eugene
Hunter, and has two children:
Kimela Lee and Gwin Morris; Ste-
phen Glenn (1949 ), married Linda
Bond, and have two children Brent
and Jennifer; Deborah Gwynn
(1951- ), married Robert Wolfe;
Stanley Gail (1954 ), married Carol
Cook, have one child, Stephanie;
and Kevin Morris (1957 ), Mala
koff
Joe Bry.tn (1926 ), WWII Vet
(South Pacific and Japan), since
1962, president of Brownsboro First
State Bank, which has enjoyed much
growth under his management, is
very active leader in city, school and
county, built new bank (1982), mar
ried Swan Boles. Their four children
are Joe Bryan Jr. (1948 ), married
Dale Williams, their three children
are Joe Bryan III, James B., and
Blake; Sheila Marie (1949 '59); Jef
fery W (1954 ), married Charla
Brown, their two children are Jeffery
Jr and Josh; and Alirhs(1960 78).

War memorial dedicated
CANTON —A memorial to honor
the men and women of Van Zandt
County who served in the armed
forces was dedicated on the
southeast corner of the county cour
thouse lawn in Canton May 24
The war memorial, donated by
the Women's League of Canton, will
stand for years to come as a tribute
to those Van Zandt County residents
who served their country The
marker reads, "In honor of the men
and women of Van Zandt County
who served in the armed forces of
our country, preserving our freedom
and our way of life."
There are about 20 members of
the Women's League of Canton who
have worked for over two years rais-
ing the funds needed to build the
war memorial.
“On behalf of all of the veterans
of Van Zandt County, and their
families, I commend and thank each
one of you, the Women's League of
Canton, for your time, thought and
effort in making your two-year
dream a reality," Dorothy Bateman
Barnes of Wills Point, Van Zandt
County Veterans Service Officer,
said when she dedicated the
memorial.
As each of us stand here today,
we have become a part of history
We will be able to see and touch a
magnificant memorial dedicated to
gallant men and women, and
remember with gTrat pride their
awesome responsibilities and great
sacrifices in protecting and defen
ding our most precious posses
sion - freedom." she said
"To veterans throughout
American history, the stars and
stripes has served as a symbol of
their service as a continuing
testimony that the service was wor
thwhile.
"Now, the veterans of Van Zandt
County can look at the monument
made possible through the generous
spirit of love and understanding by
the Womens League of Canton,
and know without a doubt they have
their own special symbol of service,"
Mrs Barnes noted.
"As we pay homage to them, let us
vow to never torgei how wr keep our
fre^dom When thev were needed,
and called, they stood and delivered
with pride," she said at the end of
the dedication
Three "Vanguards of Freedom
took part in the dedication They
were Loyd Taylor of Canton,
who was a prisoner of war for 12
months in Poland during World
War II; Bill Freeman. Van Zandt
County Commissioner, who served
in the Korean Conflict; and Rollin
Beal of Canton, who served in Viet
nam
County judge Sam Hilliard
presented the invocation at the
dedication, and the flag ceremony
was conducted by the VFW Post
9171 Canton Boy Scouts placed a
wreath on the memorial to honor
the dead. A patriotic medley was
prnfntrd by a Canton High School
Band Ensemble and the service end
ed with "Taps."
