What's In A Name
Thomas and I were talking
the other day about football
team names in the NFL. That
led us to baseball team names
and we recalled an old comedy
routine done by a comedian
called Gallagher. He used to
point out the differences in
football and baseball. Things
such as "football is played on a
GRIDIRON, baseball on a dia-
mond". In football you get a
penalty...baseball, you make
and error".
Think about all the macho
football team names...the Li-
ons, Tigers, Broncos, Eagles,
Vikings, Pirates, Redskins. Of
course, there are a few not so
"manly". The Colts aren't too
macho. And can someone tell
me what a Brown is, as in the
Cleveland Browns? Or do I
really want to know?
But compared to baseball
names it's true, they go in for
tough sounding titles.
Baseball has Cardinals, Sox,
Orioles, Blue Jays, Rangers,
Yankees and Braves. Not the
roughest, toughest, meanest
sounding names on the block.
I suppose that's fitting, since
it isn't the contact sport that
football is.
But then we come to hockey.
Now, folks, hockey is a pretty
rough game. I mean, there's
plenty of blood to be seen on a
bad night. Or do hockey fans
call that a good night? Even I,
who can't be called a sports
fan by any means, enjoy watch-
ing the fast paced action of
people on ice skimming along
body checking one another.
And what do we have for
names? The Maple Leafs, the
Stars, the Mighty Ducks and
the Wings.
So, obviously, names don't
make the game!

The Welch Gas family is celebrat-
ing their 50th anniversary this No-
vember.
The company was founded in
Naples, TX in October of 1949 by
R.J. “Rube” Welch, with one bob-
tail truck and driver. In the same year,
George Welch Sr. started a propane
business in Atlanta.
The business grew over the years,
and in June of 1958, Hershel Welch
opened an office in Bogata to serve
the Bogata area.
That same year, June Stanley was
employed to man the Bogata office.
In 1980, the Bogata office moved to
its present location and in 1987, of-
fices were established in Clarksville
and Mt. Pleasant.
Today, Hershel and son, Wes, run
and operate Welch Gas in five loca-
tions; Bogata, Clarksville, Mt. Pleas-
ant, Daingerfield and the main office
in Naples.
Not the same business, but part of
the same family is Welch Gas oper-
ated by George Jr. and Mike Welch,
Jana Welch Grandberry and husband.
Tommy in our other locations;
Texarkana, Atlanta, Linden and
Douglasville.
During the Welch Gas family’s
50th anniversary, prizes and certifi-
cates for free propane willl be given
away in a drawing the first week in
