Think On These Things f
By ESTHER BLAC K KING
Many writers, at this time of year, are searching and researching their
minds and all available literature on the subject, trying to find something
new and different to say about Christmas Sometimes it’s more advan
tageous to stop the frantic searc h and keep still for quiet meditation and
lenc an ear to the thoughts of the supraconscience.
You may hear, or have the realization, that these words are worth
repeating: "For God so loved the world that He gave Mis only begotten
Son ton that first Christmas) that whosoever believes in Him shall not
perish but have everlasting life ”
No Christmas gift has ever excelled that gieat gift from our heavenly
Father to His sinful and ungrateful children No enlargement of the im-
agination, no play on words, or coming of new words and phrases, can tell
the real meaning of Christmas as does this one verse of scripture
We have all read or heard the Christmas story as told by Luke (2:1-16)
We have seen it in pageants and plays put on by schools and church
groups. Boys dressed in their dad’s colorful bathrobes and their mother’s
turbans, as the wise men from the east; boys wearing shag rag sarongs
as shepherds from the fields; little boys and girls in white, with white
gauze wings hanging awry, singing "Glory to God in the highest and on
earth, peace and good will to all men ” The blanket wrapped doll in the
straw-lined manger ; a bearded boy playing Joseph and little Mary lean-
ing over the doll with loving care.
Yes, both Luke and Matthew gave us, in detail, the historical events of
that first Christmas. But John, in John 3:16, tells it all, simply and elo
quently, in one sentence He used the method of modern Digest Books and
condensed the story to its basic truth. That one sentence tells us that God
loves us, cares for us, sacrificed His most cherished possession that we
would not perish but have everlasting life And not only that we might
have life, but have it more abundantly! That’s what Christmas is all
about
