One of the special
things about baseball is
that one game could
theoretically go on
forever There is no clock
to end the game or, as
Yogi Berra so eloquently
stated, “it aint over tiil
it’s over.”
Yogi was right and
many oponents of the El
Campo Ricebirds this
season have learned that
lesson well as the
charges of Coach Ed
Campbell have succeed-
ed in turning several ball
games into wins in the
late innings.
The latest El Campo
comeback win came
Tuesday afternoon in
Katy-Taylor when the
Ricebirds began the sixth
inning down three runs
and ended it up five
enroute to an 8-3 win.
The Ricebirds got four
of their six hits in the
sixth inning and gladly
accepted their hosts’ help
as Katy-Taylor commit-
ted three past balls and
three errors before retir-
ing the Ricebirds
The win kept El Campo
in a tie with Friendswood
for the second-half
district lead. If the teams
remain tied for first, El
Campo will represent the
district because of their
victory in the district
season’s first half.

Katy-Taylor also has two
losses in the season’s se-
cond half to put the
Mustangs and Tigers in a
tie :or third place, one
game behind El Campo
and Friendswood
While Campbell would
prefer to not need any
comebacks, you can bet
he is glad his team has
the ability to excecute
them when the need
arises.
‘‘We just set the ball in
play,” he said, “and they
walked a couple of people
made a couple of errors.
With their help, we
scored eight runs to win.
“You got to believe in
yourself,” he added ex-
plaining his team's com-
eback success with a Tug
McGraw adage.
“Whatever you do in life,
you got to believe.”
Campbell gave junior
Jeff Knebel his first start
as a pitcher and the lanky
curveballer was very
strong in the first two inn-
ings before running into a
litttle trouble in the third.
Barry Smith then came
on with two runners on
and, after seeing three
Mustang runners cross
the plate, pitched a
perfect four innings for
his district-leading tenth
win.
Knebel got the start
because of a season-
ending injury to Bryan
After a one-week delay
because of inclement
weather, the El Campo

beautiful, clear skies.

wishers cheered their

Rasmussen Knebel had
not pitched in a game
situation since senior lit
tie league but may have
earned another look with
his early performance.
“He works very hard,”
Campbell said “We have
a lot (of players) that
need experience real
quick. We need to give
some pitchers some con-
fidence. We were strand-
ed with two (pitchers,
Knebel and Allen Heard)
that have not been on the
mound all year and one
who pitched on the JV
(Pat Krpec).
We’re working on
situations out there (in
practices) and “A”
(Heard) and Jeff have
some confidence.”
The entire Ricebird
roster seems to have con-
fidence with the game on
the line as Tuesdays
comeback came on the
heels of a seventh inning
rally last Friday night.
Daryl Socha started
the sixth inning Tuesday
with a grounder that was
mishandled for an error.
After the first passed
ball, Greg Swoboda got
his second hit of the
game. Darrell Harton
watched two more pass-
ed balls sail by and Socha
score before he got single
to bring home Swoboda
