Electric Bill Up?— Heat to Blame
FIRST BAPTIST
If your electric bill took a big
jump last fnonth—which most
- of* them in Howe did—there
are several good reasons, ac-
( cording to a Texas Power and
Light Co. spokesman. (
The chief cause, according to
Charles Parkman, manager of
the Van Alstyrie office of
TP&L, is a much higher aver-
age temperature this June
than in June of last year,
causing air conditioning units
to work extra hard. A total of
269 cooling degree days were
recorded this year, ..p 39 days,
or 17 per cent, from last June.
Degree days are based oh a
formula used to estimate
average temperatures as re-
lated to cooling and heating
requirements.
In addition, Parkman said,
the humidity has been much
higher this year, which causes
an extra load on air condition-
ers that is not figured in
degree days.
TP&L has four meter routes
in Howe, Parkman said. One
was read for 34 days after the
last reading, whereas the
other three were 30 and 31
days, he said.
There also has been an in-
crease in the fuel clause
adjustment, which accounts
for a relatively small portion of
the higher bills, he said. The
fuel clause adjustment allows
for increases based on the
excess of fuel costs over a
base rate of 20 cents.
A Prayer Breakfast will be
held at Super S Cafeteria on
Saturday morning at 7 a.m.
The breakfast is being held for
men and boys of the church.
Revival Services begin on
Sue4f|r July 20. Nathan Bus-
sey adil conduct the services,
and Chrlie Johnson and his
wife Mary, will be in charge of
the music.

Notify City Before
Leaving on Vacation
If you are going out of town
on vacation, don’t advertise it
to potential burglars, Police
Chief Jerry Hallmark urged
this week.
And above all, Hallmark ask-
ed, come by or phone city hall
and leave word that you will
be out of town and how long
you will be gone so that police
can make periodic checks on
your house.
“We haven’t had any prob-
lems yet this summer with
burglrrs,” Hallmark said,
“but that doesn’t mean it is
not going to happen.”
Aside from notifying the city,
he urged that persons plan-
ning to be out of town have a
neighbor pick up their news-
papers, “and be sure to mow
the yard just before you leave,
since long grass is an indica-
tion the occupants are away.”
He also suggested that you
leave some lights on, or, bet-
ter yet, install a device that
will switch the lights on and
off automatically.
It also is a good idea to have
a neighbor park his car in your
driveway occasionally.
Water Line Near Completion
The new six-inch water line
to serve south Howe is nearly
ready except for the final sec-
tion under Highway 5, plus
testing, City Secretary Tommy
Haynes said tis week.
If all goes well, he added, it
should be in service within the
next 10 days.
The Whitewright firm which
contracted for the job bored
under Highway 5 early this
week and by' the end of the
week should have the line laid
there. It has been laid in all
other sections. Before the line
is placed in operation it will
have to be tested for leaks and
water samples sent off to the
GIBSON’S
State Department of Health in
Austin.
The line extends south from
Hughes street and Duke,
south through a private ease-
ment then west across High-
way 5 and south to the city
limits. A previous article in
The Enterprise incorrectly
stated that it extended south
from Hughes and Duke
though an alley. However, city
officials pointed out that it is a
private easement and is not
open to the public.
The line is expected to great-
ly increase water pressure in
south Howe. A number of new
fire hydrants also will be in-
stalled as part of the project.
