Wood Labor Bill
Killed By Close
Vote In Boose
Junior Dairy Day
Champions Named
W ASHING TUN, May 4 • (INS)
The House today killed the Wood
tabor bill by a narrow 212 to 209
vote, leaving In confusion the
question whether new labor legis-
lation la to be passed to replace
the raft-Hartley Act.
The action was a bitter defeat
for the Republican-southern Demo-
crat coalition, which was In sight
of victory when the chamber ap-
proved the Wood measure yesterday
by a 14-vote margin.
Tlw Wood bill would have re-
tained the Taft-Hartley Act with
minor changes.
Administration leaders, om-
pletely defeated In Tuesday's
teat votes, rallied sufficiently
to send the wood bill to the House
Labor Committee. This killed the
measure.
It also left the Taft-Hartley Act
on the statute bonks, unthreatened
for the moment. It meant that
administration efforts to supplant
the act had been stopped >»ld
temporarily.
Sen. McGrath D> R. I., chairman
of the Democratic National Com-
mittee, Immediately served notice
that Truman Democrats would
continue to fight for repea of
the Taft-Hartley Act.
Labor Secretary Tobin said he
la still confident that congress
will repeal the Taft-Hartley law
at this seaslon.
