Gutierrez, Mendiola are BHS Students of the Month
BENAVIDES - The Benav-
ides High School Eagle Chron-
icle announces the January sen-
iors of the month. They are Nora
Gutierrez and Michael Mendiola.
Nora E. Gutierrez is the
daughter of Baldemar and Laura
Gutierrez from Benavides.
She is active in UIL, One-Act

KC contest
slated in SD
The San Diego Knights of Co-
lumbus Regional Basketball
Throw will be held on Saturday,
Feb. 23 at the San Diego High
School Gym at 2:00PM. Regis-
tration will be between l:00and
1:30PM.
Competeing are boys and
girls ages 10 to 14 first place
winners of their district. First
place winner of the Regional will
compete for state honors at St.
Edwards University in Austin on
March 16.
The Regional is divided for
competition into ten districts in
the Corpus Christi Diocese. The
Diocese covers an area from
Corpus Christi to Laredo.
This activity is free and all the
public is invited to attend.
Farmers to
meet Feb. 25
There will be two public
meetings held in Duval County to
answer questions concerning the
1991 Farm Bill. These meetings
will contain information con-
cerning the 1991 Farm Program
Enrollment, 1991 CRP Signup
(Conservation Reserve Pro-
gram), as well as other programs.
The schedule for these meet-
ings are Monday, Feb. 25 at
7:00PM at the Concepcion Civic
Center and Tuesday, March 5 at
7:00PM at the San Diego Civic
Center.
Producers wishing to enroll
farms in the 1991 Feed Grain and
Cotton programs can begin sign-
ing up on Monday, March 4 and
ends Friday, April 26.
There will be another signup
period for producers wishing to
enroll acreage in the Conserva-
tion Reserve Program. Provi-
sions for the program will be
basically the same as previous
years. All regulations will be
furnished by the time signup be-
gins which is on Monday, March
4 and ends Friday, March 15.
Play, Eagle Chronicle. Marching
and Stage Band (Band Presi-
dent). She has been nominated
two years to Who's Who Among
American High School Students,
and was a Stale Finalist-Texas
Supreme Court Sesquicentennial
Celebration Essay Writing Con-
test.
In, addition, her hobbies in-
cludefreading, writing, acting and
traveling.

Mutualistas that have not paid
their dues need to contact H.
Ibanez at 279-3721 or E.G. Solis
at 279-3785 as soon as possible.
The SDISD PAC will meet
on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the
school's main library from 12:00
noon to 4:00PM. The topic will
be "Let's Read Together”, and
will be presented by Ignacio
Salinas, Jr., Archie Parr Princi-
pal.
Persons needing a ride to the
meeting call can Maggie Gutier-
rez at 279-2858. Baby sitters will
be available for children of those
participating. Refreshments will
be served.

The Tri-County Retired
Teachers Association will meet
at the Duval County Museum in
San Diego on Feb. 21, at 2:00PM.
All retired teachers in our area
who have never joined the asso-
ciation are invited to attend.

Garcia. Hostesses will be Car-
men Reese of Freer, and Mary
Garcia, Mary Carrejo, Isabel
Gongora and Hortensia Perez of
San Diego.

She plans to attend Sarah
Lawrence College and major in
Communications and Theatre.
Michael Mendiola is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Mendiola
of Benavides. Michael has been a
member of the Eagle Varsity
football team for three years. He
was a member of the bi-district
finalist team in 1988-89. He was
second team secondary all-dis-
trict in 1989-90. In his senior year
he was named Area Player of the
Week by the Laredo Times and
ftulul Count? Ukturt. Michael
was selected first team secondary
all-district quarterback and was
named Honorable Mention Sec-
ondary in 1990-91. He was also
selected for Who's Who in Sports
for 90-91.
Michael has been a member
of the varsity basketball team. He
was selected Honorable Mention
in his junior year. He is presently
a varsity team member.
He was also a member of the
Eagle baseball team in 1988-89.
They were district champs. He
was selected first team all-district
third base. In his junior year he
was also selected second team
all-district (utility infielder).
Michael was a member of the
annual stall as a Sophomore. He
is a member of the B-Associa-
tion. Mike is a member of the
Altar Boys of Santa Rosa de
Lima Parish.
Michael has been a certified
lifeguard for the Benavides ISD
swimming pool for two years. He
has been an active volunteer in
time of community disasters.
Michael plans to attend col-
lege at UTS A and major in law.
