The American Legion, passed a
resolution in support of veter-
ans status for the WASP at their
State Convention.
The Dept. of Colorado will
take the following resolution to
The American Legion National
Convention to be held in Den-
ver, Colo., August 23-25, seeking
support of the National organi-
zation:
WHEREAS, The members of I
the Women Airforce Service
Pilots took the same oath as wasI
given the male cadets; andI
WHEREAS, The WASPs were I
required to perform military
duties not required of other
civilian pilots that included:
. Taking part in parades andDept. of Colo. AL Seeks Nat'l OK For WASP
drills
" Being subject to military
courtesy and discipline (salu-
ting)
" Carrying weapons and train-
ing in their use
" Wearing uniforms on and off
duty
" Standing roll call inspec-
tions
" Living in barracks, cleaning
and standing barracks inspec-
tions
" Assigned to courses normal-
ly reserved for military person-
nel such as Military Law, Mili-
tary Courtesy, and the Articles
of War; and
WHEREAS, The WASPs
worked as required 8-24 hours
on duty in flight activities thatwere not known to be assigned
to other civilian pilots which
were:
" Ferrying of pursuit aircraft
" Flying radio controlled air-
craft ("Restricted" project)
" Towing targets for anti-air-
craft firing live ammunition
" Towing targets for air-to-air
gunnery practice firing live
ammunition
" Test flying new jet aircraft
" Graduated from flight
school (Pursuit and Bomber)
* Assigned to air bases with
"Restricted" projects, such as
Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio,
Research and Development;
Elgin Field, Florida, Air Prov-
ing Ground Command; Camp
Stewart, Georgia (Anti-aircraftsupport with Drones); and
Wendover, Utah, (Manhatten
Project); and
WHEREAS, The WASPs used
side arms guarding classified
equipment; and
WHEREAS, The WASPs were
told if they performed their
duties efficiently they would be
militarized; and
WHEREAS, The WASPs were
recommended for militariza-
tion by the House Committee on
Military Affairs, the Command-
ing General of the Army Air
Forces and the Secretary of
War during wartime; and
WHEREAS, 38 of the WASPs
died in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, All the WASPs
who completed training servedloyally; and
WHEREAS, The families of
the WASPs who died could not
display a gold star in their
windows while this country has
seen fit to award the mother of
its only WWII deserter military
benefits; and, now, therefore be
it
RESOLVED, by The Ameri-
can Legion in National Conven-
tion assembled in Denver, Col-
orado, August 23, 24, 25, 1977,
that The American Legion-sup-
ports granting WASPs military
status and that failure to do so
infringes on their human right
to dignity as veterans who
served their country honorably
