Tax law could increase funding
ByNCALBRADSHER

year and defer income until next
year. This is because most taxpayers
will be in higher tax brackets this
year.
Postponed income will be taxable
in lower brackets and deductions
taken this year will be worth more
because tax brackets are higher
Linder said.
The department which is sending
a pamphlet explaining the new law
to all of its contacts is only propos-
ing charitable possibilities that
would help both the families and
the organization Linder said.
For example if a person who is
classified in the maximum tax
bracket were to give $100000 as a
donation this year it would save
him $50000 ($100000 x 50 per-
cent). The tax savings for the same
gift in 1987 would be $35000
($100000 x 35 percent) and
$28000 ($100000 x 28 percent) in
1988.' Thus it could save a person
$15000 (to make a contribution in
1986 rather than 1987 and $32000
instead of 1 988 Maxwell said.
But even if a person is not
classified in the maximum tax
bracket it would still be beneficial
to him to make his donations this
year rather than next year Max-
well said.
Another option becoming more
popular is estate planning which is
making contributions through a
will. The key reasons for its popu
larity are the tax advantage it pro-
vides and the ability to customize it
in almost any way Maxwell said.
"The donor can make it where
his assets will be transfered upon
his death or 20 years later. Or he
can divide it between children or
other members of the family and an
orgnaization.
"There are countless possibilities
and we help each individual plan
which combination will help him
the most" Maxwell said.
For a complete listing of all of the
possible benefits of the new tax law
Linder suggests calling the Devel-
opment Department and have them
send the pamphlet entitled The New
1986 Tax Law.
Became of changes in our tax laws
the Development Department could
ee increased funding for the pro-
'posed Bible building said Gene
Linder director of public relations
and development.
.Funding for the building which
has been running slower than hoped
for because of the economy should
only benefit from the new law
Linder said.
In order for people to benefit
from the new law signed by Presi-
dent Reagan in early November
Linder said they should make as
many deductions as possible this

Ashby speaks at Eagle Scout banquet
By SUE DAVIS
Optimist staff
The Abilene Chisholm Trail
Chapter of the National Eagle Scout
Association conducted its Fall Ban-
quet Saturday to welcome new
members.
Dr. Jon Ashby professor of
communication disorders was the
speaker at the banquet and spoke
about "The Trail of the Eagle."
Abilene's local chapter was estab-
lished on the ACU campus in 1985
but was transferred to Chisholm
Trail this year so Eagles throughout
West Texas could be council
members Ashby said.
Ashby said the title of Eagle
Scout is recognized throughout
most countries of the world. The
program provides young men with
training and experience to serve the
community he said.
"Because ot the competition and
achievement involved Eagles are
assumed to have leadership capabili-
ty and high ethical standards in a
world where mediocrity reigns
supreme... It's good to recognize
those who at an early age have
chosen' to develop themselves as
leaders and servants" Ashby said.
He said it takes three-and-a-half
years of diligent work to become an
Eagle Scout. AH scouts must have
their Eagle granted by their 16th
birthday. Ashby said only three
percent of all boys who become
scouts will become an Eagle scout.
Karl Olson sophomore criminal
justice major from Abilene is
president of the ACU chapter and
an organizing member of the
Chisholm chapter. Olson said any
Eagle is welcome to be a member of
the local chapter. He can be con-
tacted at ACU box 69 1 1 .
