Reagan looks
to new regime
WASHINGTON (AP) -President
Reagan told congres-
sional leaders the United States
sent military equipment to Iran
in an attempt to establish ties
with moderate elements in the
Iranian government published
reports said Thursday.
The remarks were made at a
closed-door meeting Wednesday
and were reported by The
Washington Post The New
York Times and The Baltimore
Sun. The newspapers quoted
unidentified administration and
congressional sources.
The Times reported that an
administration official para-
phrased Reagan at the meeting as
saying the United States would
be at fault if Ayatollah Ruhollah
Khomeini died "and wc had not
made any preparations for con-
tacts with a future regime. The
arms are necessary for that."
Wednesday's congressional
briefing was the first since the
emergence of reports of a pur-
ported administration attempt to
complete an arms-for-hostages
deal with Iran to spring Ameri-
cans held captive in Lebanon.
"I have not changed my
mind" said Senate Democratic
leader Robert C. Byrd D-W.Va.
after the meeting. Byrd has
sharply criticized what he said is
the administration's apparent vi-
olation of its own policy not to
negotiate with terrorists.

strongly denied an arms-for-hostages
deal with the United
States. He did however confirm
that his government was receiv-
ing U.S.-made military hard-
ware. "We did not have any arms
deal or any other kind of deal
with regard to the release of the
hostages with the United
States or anyone else" he told a
news conference Wednesday.
And he insisted that the "two
issues arc absolutely separate."
Speaking on "Today" Thurs-
day morning Rajaic-Khorassani
held out the possibility that Iran
could use its influence to help
free American hostages Thomas
Sutherland and Terry Anderson.
"I think that if we do our best
in order to convince the people
of Lebanon toward that objec-
tive it is very likely that they
will be (released)" Ra-jaie-Khorassani
said. "However
we are not absolutely sure that
our intermediary role will cer-
tainly be accepted."
The Times and National
Public Radio reported Thursday
that some of the arms to Iran ar-
rived last July 4 aboard a Boeing
707 cargo plane owned by
Farhad Azima a Kansas City
Mo. businessman who im-
migrated from Iran in the 1950s.
Those reports said 23 tons of
military hardware aboard the
plane were in crates addressed to
the Iranian air force but were
marked as being hospital supplies.
