Girls Face Showdown
Against Frisco Friday
III**
HISS
The Howe girls’ varsity bas-
ketball team, undefeated in
district play, heads for its
crucial game of the season at
Frisco Friday night—a game
that is almost certain to decide
the first round championship.
The girls added two more
victories to their total the past
week, downing Pilot Point Fri-
day in Howe, 37-33, and de-
feating Van Alstyne at Van
Tuesday of this week, 34-24.
Coach Rick Clements, who
said he would like to see some
of the Howe folks show up at
Friday’s Frisco game to in-
spire the girls to victory, says
the contest will be the sea-
son’s biggest test for the
guards.
“Frisco is a high scoring
team...they beat Pottsboro by
31 points Tuesday. We’ve got
to go there to play Friday
night or they could blow us out
of it in the first five menutes.’’
Clements said, however, that
he is confident the guards will
keep Frisco from running
amuk-. “They played very well
in both games this past week,
and in fact kept us in the
games while _the forwards
were having problems.’
In Friday’s win over Pilot
Point the score was not as
close as the final four-point
margin indicated. The Howe
girls were ahead most of the
game by 8 to 10 points.
Dianne Lankford was the
leading scorer with 21, Terri
McDaniel hit for 10 and Paula
Wheeler had 6.
Against Van Alstyne Tues-
day, the Howe girls jumped
off to an 11-0 lead in the first
quarter and made it 13-0 in
the opening seconds of the
second quarter before Van fin-
ally scored.
From there on things didn’t
go so well, as the girls ended
up missing 20 of 30 free
throws. “If we play like that
Friday we will be in big
trouble,” Clements comment-
ed. Against Van, Lankford
scored 19, Wheeler 8, Mc-
Daniel 4 and Debbie Spegal 1.
Boys’ Varsity Tunes Up on Van
For Run at Second Round Title
The Howe Bulldog boys’ var-
sity football team, three
games into district play, has
been eliminated from consid-
eration for the first round title
by virtue of losses to' Sanger
and Pilot Point—but they have
to set their, sights now on the
second round.
Tuesday night began tunning
up for this possibility with a
55-41 win over Van Alstyne.

championship. The Bulldogs
lost to Sanger in their opener
Jan. 6 in overtime.
Last Friday, Pilot Point, a
surprise team in the district,
jumped on the Bulldogs hard,
68-57, in a game that was
never close. “We were coming
off the big loss to Sanger and
just weren’t up like we should
have been,” said Coach Rick
Clements. We handled the
ball well and played a good
offensive floor game, but
couldn’t hit our shots and
played very poorly on de-
fense.”
Tim Smithart led the team
with 23 points and Ronny
Davis was a close second with
21.
Tuesday against Van Als-
tyne, Clements juggled the
starting lineup in an attempt
to get more height into it. and
feels it may prove to be bene-
ficial.
Jay Davis started at forward
and had 7 points and 10 re-
bounds for the evening. With
Ronny Davis getting 12 re-
bounds, the Bulldogs were
able to control the backboards.
The Bulldogs jumped off to a
30-17 lead at halftime, then
played the Panters about even
in the. second half.
The Bulldogs are will face
Frisco about 8 p.m. Friday at
Frisco, following the girls’
game at 7.
Jayvee Teams Lose
To Van, Pilot Point
Both of Howe’s junior varsity
baskeball teams went down to
defeat the past week.
The boys lost to Pilot Point,
41-25, Friday in Howe, and
the girls lost to Van Alstyne
Tuesday, 36-15, at Van.
The boys are now 0-1 in
district play while the girls are
1-1.
The boys, in losing to Pilot
point, missed the services of
three starters who were
benched by Coach Eddie Bris-
ter for failure to get their hair
cut.
James Davis was high point
man for Howe with 6.
The big factor in the game
was the Bulldogs.’ inability to
handle the press, which Pilot
Point applied in the first and
fourth quarters. Howe scored
only 2 points in each of those
periods.
The boys will play Frisco
Friday at Frisco beginning at
5:30 p.m.
For the girls, in their loss to
Van, Vicki Langdon was high
scorer with 6.
Brister said Cindy Boatman
played well at guard.-
The girls’ next game is Tues-
day at Howe against Potts-
boro. The jayvee boys also
play that day. The girls game,
will begin at 4, followed at 5
by the boys.

Bicentennial Military Caravan to Visit
The Armed Forces Bicenten-
nial Caravan will arrive in
Sherman for two days of show-
ings to the public.
The mobile museums repre-
sent the four major military
services and illustrate the bi-
centennial theme—“The His-
tory of the Armed Services
and Their Contributions to the
Nation.” The exhibit will be
on display Monday, Jan. 26
from 2 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday,
Jan. 27, from noon to 7 at the
Sher-Den Mall.
Capt. Ken Colucci, officer in
charge, emphasized that the
exhibit is a “concerted effort
by the armed forces to bring
the American Revolution Bi-
centennial closer to the people
of Sherman and surrounding
communities. It is not a re-
cruitment program,” he add-
ed.
Colucci says the vans use
audio-visual techniques to de-
pict the contributions of the
services militarily and also
their contributions to the civil-
ian community.
The Air Force van features a
multi-image slide presentation
that was awarded the gold
medal for best multi-media
documentary at the Inter-
national Film and TV Festival
of New York. Fifteen project-
ors and more than 700 slides
are used simultaneously in the
show.
The Army van relates the
Army’s history and contribu-
tions to the nation in six
areas: Wartime role, civil act-
ions, community assistance,
technology and medicine, ex-
ploration, and contributions to
the nation.
The Marine Corps van de-
picts the corps’ history and its
conributions in the Revolution-
ary War, the century of, 1798
to 1898, the Marine Corps
Band, the 20th Century, and
the Marines today.
The Navy exhibits protray the
Navy’s role in America’s first
200 yuears through selected
historical events.
The caravan began its jour-
ney on July 4. 1975, and will
travel more than 1,500,000
miles by Dec. 31, 1976.
Water Board Okay
Awaited to Start Well
The City of Howe is awaiting
only the approval of the State
Water Development Board be-
fore it officially awards the
contracts on the city’s new
water well.
City officials said this week
that the bids have been ap-
proved by the Economic De-
velopment Administration,
which is providing 60 per cent
of the funding for the project,
and work will probably get
under way in mid-February if
the Water Development Board
approval is received soon, as
expected.
The new well, 200,000-gallon
storage tank and water lines
will boost the city’s water
capacity by 300-gallons per
minute.
And, said engineer John
Wortham, the test borings
made last summer indicate the
\
potential of the new well will
be as much as 500 gallons per
minute. The city could prob-
ably get that much if it should
decide at some future date to
increase the pump capacity.
The total well project—well,
storage tank and water lines—
will cost .5318,668, if the low
bids are accepted as council
recommended after opening
bids at the Dec. 18 meetng.
Layne Western Co., inc. was
low bidder on the well.
W.B.F. Construction Co. of
Dallas was low bidder on the
pump station and storage
tank, and Shellenberger, Inc.
of Sherman was low bidder on
the water lines.

Frozen Pipes
Only Casualty
Of Cold Spell
Howe residents survived last
week’s cold snap in good
shape—no fires or other ser-
ious problems—but there were
several cases of frozen water
pipes.
The city reported that it re-
ceived “three or four” calls
Friday and Saturday to come
take care of situations in which
pipes had burst and water
was running into yards.
Temperatures as low as 7
degrees above zero were re-
corded in the Howe area
Thursday morning, which was
the coldest morning in at least
two years.
