Lady BufF Josephine Longoria's
bonus free throws with 10 seconds
left hammered the nails in the cof-
fin of ACU at the Lone Star Con-
ference postseason tournament final
in Canyon Friday.
West Texas State won the LSC ti-
tle for the third consecutive year
over the Lady Cats with Friday's
72-68 victory.
The Lady Buffs received an
automatic bid to the NCAA Divi-
sion II national tourney.
Despite Friday's loss ACU was
invited to the tournament and will
play in the south central region
tournament this weekend.
"We had a pretty good ball
game" said Coach Burl McCoy.
"It was not as good as we would've
liked."
In the LSC final ACU hung tight
with the Lady Buffs after a slow
start.
Forward Pat Bidwcll eased the
Cats into the game with her jumper
at the 16:49 mark to put the score
5-2 in WTSU's favor.
The Lady Cats fought to a one-
point lead with 10:17 remaining in
the half after center Sharlyn
Moore's bank shot.
ACU went up by three about a
minute later when forward
Stephanie Spring swished two from
the charity stripe.
But West Texas and the Box
Rowdies remained within striking
distance during the following eight
minutes.
The lead seesawed six times and
was tied three other times before
the Lady Cats emerged with a
four-point lead at intermission.
They scored six unanswered points
in the last minute of the half.
The Lady Buffs came out hot in
the second half closing the gap to
two points with about 12 minutes
remaining. "
At the 12:04 mark Lady Buff
guard Leona Gcrbcr built the coffin
for ACU as she ripped three 3-
pointcrs and two freebies in a
minute and a half.
. Longoria also got into the action
with a field goal putting WTSU
ahead 55-44 with 10:05 left.
"We did not do a good job on
Gerbcr" McCoy said. "I probably
should of put Suzanne on her in

on LSC all-tournament team
Two Lady Cats were named to
the Lone Star Conference all-
tournament team Friday night in
Canyon.
Forward Stephanie Spring
senior. from Tulsa Okla. and
guard Anita Vigil sophomore
from Mora N.M. were chosen
for the all-tourney squad.
Three West Texas State
players joined them on the honor
team.
Lady BufTs Tammy Williams
Denise Hunt and Teresa Tinner
were named to the team.
WTSU guard Leona Gerbcr
was named the tournament's
most valuable player. She scored
20 points in the Lady Buffs' win
over ACU.
Coach Burl McCoy said he
was pleased with the ACU
players named to the squad.
"I thought it was deserved"
McCoy said. "I thought they
played well."
Vigil paced the Lady Cats dur-
ing the LSC tournament. She
scored 101 points in three games.

well."
ACU center Angie Dill broke the
Buffs' rally with two free throws
but the Lady Buffs kept the margin
at about 10 until the four minute
mark.
Lady Cat guard Anita Vigil hit a
shot to put the score at 66-59 with
3:55 left.
But Dill who had three fouls four
minutes into the game and collected
her fourth earlier in the second half
committed her last foul with 2:42
remaining.
Moore went in for Dill as the
Lady Buffs built an 11 -point lead
with just over two minutes left.
McCoy called a timeout with 1:47
left and told his squad to quit stan-
ding around.
The timeout helped the Cats as
Vigil was able to get open and hit a
jumper at the 1:36 mark.
Vigil was fouled while shooting
26 seconds later but her shot didn't
fall. Then from the charity line the
first shot rolled around the rim and
fell out. Her second shot hit hard
ofTthe back and WTSU got the re-
bound. But 15 seconds later teammate
Suzanne Johnson put one up from
3-point-land and it fell to bring
ACU behind by five at 70-65.
With 41 seconds remaining Lady
Cat Sandy Williamson committed
her fifth foul and WTSU's Gerbcr
went to the line for the bonus shots.
But she missed the front end of
the one-and-one and ACU re-
bounded the ball.
At the 30-second mark Bid well
who was playing with a sore right
ankle swished a 3-pointer in front
of the ACU bench to cut the margin
to two.
But then ACU had to foul to stop
the clock and Longoria hit from the
line.
McCoy said he was concerned
about the Lady Cats stopping
WTSU center Teresa Tinner. In
the two previous games with the
Lady Buffs Tinner had been a fac-
tor. But Tinner had only four points
Friday.
"Sandy did an excellent job on
her" McCoy said.
Vigil paced the Lady Cats with 23
points Friday.
The Wildcats' season record
stands at 23-7.
Stephanie Spring
points in the tournament
quarterfinal against Texas A&I.
She averages 11.6 points a
game and had 12 points Friday
in Canyon.
"It was a nice surprise" Spr-
ing said. "I thought I played fair-
ly well the last three games but I
wasn't really expecting it. I

The men's track team qualified two
people for the outdoor national
track meet at the first outdoor meet
of the year in Laredo last weekend.
Michael Moloto senior from
Burgersfort South Africa qualified
in the 5000 meters in a winning
time of 14:24.
Coach Jerry Dyes said Moloto ran
well and by qualifying early in the
5000 he can concentrate more on
the 10000-meter race.
Mike Thornton senior from Col-
ton Ore. won the pole vault with a
vault of 17 feet also qualifying for
nationals.
The Wildcats' other first-place
winner was Aaron Phillips sopho-
more from Caracas Venezuela.
Phillips took the 400 meters in
47.9.

"The time was not super fast but
the wind was blowing about 40
miles per hour" Dyes said.
Phillips qualified for nationals in
the 400 at the Texas Tech All-
Comers indoor meet last weekend.
Wendell Edwards freshman from
Tennessee Colony came within a
foot of winning trie 110-meter hur-
dles Dyes said.
He ran a 14.45 to place third.
Donald Burke junior from
Kingston Jamaica finished fourth
in the race. -
James Browne senior from Whit-
tier Calif. finished third in the
long jump and triple jump. Browne-
jumped 24-1 in the long jump and
50-2 in the triple jump.
Dyes said Browne's triple-jump
performance was well off his quali-
fying jump at Texas Tech last
weekend but he had some technical
problems on the takeoff and at the
board because of the wind.
In the 800 meters Ed Daily and
Mark Young both ran season-best
times in the preliminaries Friday
but finished fifth and sixth respec-
tively in the finals Saturday
because of the high winds.
Daily sophomore from Lynwood
Calif. ran a 1:52.49 Friday and a
1:56.6 in the finals and Young
freshman from Haskell ran a
1:52.74 in the prelims and a 1:58.2
in the finals.
West Brooks senior from Aransas
Pass placed sixth in the 1500
meters with a time of 4:06.7.
Craig Comolli junior from
Brownwood threw the javelin for
the first time this season placing
sixth with a throw of 192-1.
In the 5000 meters Neal Brooks
sophomore from Aransas Pass ran a
15:22 to finish sixth.
Dyes said no sprinters ran at the
meet because they complained of
sore legs.
"Sprinters with sore legs and cold
weather don't mix too well so we'll
take our time with them because we
don't have too many" he said.
