Talking
It Over
With
JOHN PUNDT
Whirlwind Two Weeks
Tournaments are over for Humble...at least regular
season tournaments this basketball season... of course
there s always the possibility of an appearance in
a regional tournament, or even the state tournament
in February and March.
Humble' crammed three tournaments into the past
three weekends to pile up 10 games. In tourney
play, the Wildcats won six , lost four and won one
championship, the Humble Jaycee tourney crown.
It was a whirlwind first two weeks for the Humble
cagers, delayed three weeks in starting due to the
advance to the football quarterfinals.
Coach Bruce Smith hustled his squ'ad through 11
games in 17 days. And Humble can be proud of its
7-4 season record to date. The Cats were going
against teams that had played many more games this
season and had been practicing a lot longer.
And another thing to remember.. .all four of Humble’s
basketball losses so far this year have been to class
AAA clubs — once each to Wharton and Cypress-
Fairbanks and twice to the Dickinson Gators.
On the win side, the Cats have whipped three class
AAA outfits — Channelview, Lamar Consolidated and
Bay City. Humble has had no trouble with any of the
class AA and A teams they have played thus far.
Maybe Back-To-Back
The Wildcats have one more round of games to
“polish ’’ for the start of district 23-AA play next
week. Houston San Jacinto and Huntsville come to
town this weekend and local basketball fans should
get a good chance to decide Humble’s chances this
year.
San Jacinto will move into the Humble High School
gymnasium Friday night. The Golden Bears will be
the first and only class A AAA team Humble will play
this season.
Then Saturday night Huntsville, a class AAA out-
fit, will provide the opposition. Both varsity games
are down for 7:30 p.m.
* * * * *
Speaking of the start of district 23-AA play, that
will come a week from Friday when Humble travels
to Liberty.
Word around the league has it that Humble is
the favorite with Hamshire-Fannett and Sour Lake
the toughest of the rest. '
It happens, but it’s not the usual thing...for one school
to win both the football and basketball district cham-
pionships in the same year. But Humble has a
chance to accomplish that feat this year.
And if that happens, at least four basketball starters
will have had a big hand in both titles. Sidney Robert-
son, Lloyd Long, Ed Zohar and Billy Tyler all were
stalwarts on the Wildcat grid team last fall.
* 4c * * *
And while its unusual for one team to win both
football and basketball championships back-to-back,
sqme have even advanced to the football state cham-
pionship and then made the trek to the state basket-
ball tournament.
There were two examples last year...Donna in class
AA and Dumas in class AAA. Both won the football
state title and both went to the state basketball
tourney last March.
Tourney Facts . . .
Some facts and thoughts on last week’s Rosenburg
tournament:
Lloyd Long was Humble’s leading scorer in the
four tourney games...he hit for a total of 53 points.
His highest single game total was 16 against Wharton
in the semifinals.
Next came Ed Zohar with 40 points. His high
of 13 against Lamar Consolidated in the opening
game. He was limited to four points in the Bay
City game.
Billy Tyler came up with 31 points during the two-
day tourney. He hit for 10 against both Lamar and
Dickinson, but fell to only two against Bay City.
That 31-28 win for Humble over Bay City in the
second round was the lowest scoring game the Cats
have played in thus far this season. The final score
wasn t abnormally low, but that first quarter count
of 3-2 in favor of Humble was.
Still, it wasn’t the best defensive effort of the tam-
paigh for Bruce Smith’s charges. Humble held Hull-
Daisetta to only 25 points in a first round game in the
Humble Jaycee Tournament here a couple of weeks
ago.

And Thoughts
Probably the best looking sophomore at the Rosen-
burg tournament was the 6’5” Wharton post man
Jimmy Hubinak.
He’s weak on defense and can be moved around under
the boards, but has an eye for the bucket and can
score with the “big boys’’ already. We should hear
more Of him and the Wharton Tigers in the next
couple of seasons.
And who knows, Wharton might just go on to win its
district championship this year, although a good
showing in an invitational tournament means little
once all the stops are pulled in a district cam-
paign.
*****
Zone defenses continue to be by far the most
popular among teams in this area. The zone was far
more prevalent than man-to-man at the Rosenburg
tournament.. .although Dickinson whipped Humble with
a man-to-man.
*****
That loss to Dickinson in the third place game
Saturday night marked the second time this season
the Gators have successfully handled Humble. •
The first came in a second round game in the
Clear Creek tournament. That time Dickinson won
by 49-38 and Saturday the score was 45-41, even
though Humble had led most of the way.
Dickinson certainly is one of the stronger triple A
clubs in the area...the Gators took third place in the
Rosenburg tourney and came close to downing Clear
Crook on its home court in the finals of the Clear
r roftk tournament.
/A'net the Gators are the only team to have defeated
Mumble twice this season.

ROSENBURG - Humble
split out at 2-2 in the
Rosenburg Lions Club bas-
ketball tournament here
last weekend, winding up
fourth place in the 16-team
meet.
The W i Id c a t s whipped
host Lamar Consolidated,
48-44, and Bay City, 31-
28, in their first two games
on Friday. Then on Satur-
day, Wharton downed the
Cats, 48-39, in the semi-
finals and Dickinson won by
45-41 in the third place
game.
Following their third
tournament in as many
weekends, the Wildcats of
Coach Bruce Smith own a
7-4 season record. Humble
was 5-2 before the Rosen-
burg tourney.
The Cats play a pair of
non-district games hereon
Friday and Saturday nights
(see story, this page).
In Humble’s opening
game, the Cats led through-
out the first three quarters
against Lamar, but the
Mustangs forged into the
lead for the first and only
time with four minutes left
in the game, 40-39.
Humble shot its way to a
13-10 first quarter lead and
opened up a 26-19 advan-
tage by halftime. By the end
of the third period, how-
ever, Lamar had cut the
margin to 35-32.
Early in the fourth per-
iod, the Mustangs climbed
to within one point at 37-36,
but then Billy Tyler pushed
through a long jump shot to
build the lead back up to
39-36.
Lamar, however, scored
four, straight points to take
its 40-39 lead. Lloyd Long
hit a field goal, though, and
Sidney Robertson put in two
free throws .for a 43-40
lead and the Cats were
never headed.
In the low-scoring
second round game, Hum-
ble lead by only 3-2 over
Bay City by the end of the
third quarter. The teams
warmed a bit in the second
quarter, however, as Bay
City shot into a 13-11 lead
by halftime.
Both used zone defenses.
That two-point halftime
lead for Bay City went the
other way in the third per-
iod as Humble went ahead
at 21-19 going into the final
stanza.
Bay City never led in
that final quarter as Ty-
ler, Long and Ed Zohar
goaled often enough to pro-
vide the Cats with two to
five-point leads.
Humble started its stall
with 1:37 left in the game
with a 29-27 lead. Zohar
and Sidney Robertson each
sank free throws in the
last minute to give Humble,
the 31-28 victory.
Wharton led all the way in
the Tigers ’ 48-39 victory
over Humble in the semi-
finals. The Tigers opened
up a lopsided 11-2 margin
midway through the first
quarter and held a 14-7 ad-
vantage by the end of the
first period.
Wharton’s Jimmy Hubi-
nak, and Humble’s Long
traded buckets during the
second quarter as Wharton
went in at intermission
nursing a 24-16 lead.
The Cats fell further be-
hind in the third quarter as
Wharton was ahead by 38-
24 going into the fourth
period. Wharton stalled
through most of the fourth
quarter.
In the third place game,
Dickinson led early and
late, but that was enough
as Humble led most of the
way before faltering late
in the fourth quarter.
After the Gators held
brief early leads, Robert-
son hit two free throws with
5:55 left in the first quarter
to send Humble into a 5-4
lead the Cats didn’t give up
until in the fourth quarter.
Humble led by 15-13 at <
the end of the first quarter,
26-23 at halftime and by
33-32 at the end of the
third quarter. The Cats led
by as much as nine points
late in the first half, but
a whirlwind second-quar-
ter finish by the Gators cut
that to only three points .by
halftime.
In the fourth quarter,
Humble went ahead at 34-
32 in the first half-minute,
but then Dickinson tied it
up at 34-34 and then went
in front to stay at 36-34
with 5:54 left to play.
Humble employed a full-
court press through most
of the foruth quarter, but
Dickinson’s Gators man-
aged to maintain three tcr~
seven-point leads all the
way.
In the Humble-Dickenson,
game, the Cats used a zone";
defense except near the end
when they were behind
while the Gators stayed
with a man-to-man all the
way.
