Playoff For No, 1 Slot Thursday
Lady Ricebirds Tie For 12-4A Crown
By MARK THOMPSON
Placed in a do-or-die situa-
tion Friday at the El Campo
gym, the Lady Ricebird var-
sity volleyball team did,
knocking off Brazosport in a
three-game thriller 15-5,
16-18, 15-13. After the match,
the team learned of an unex-
pected bonus.
Across the river in Whar-
ton, the Lady Tigers knocked
off Santa Fe. If Santa Fe had
won that game, El Campo,
Brazosport, and the Lady In-
dians would have been involv-
ed in a three-way playoff for
two playoff slots, but because
of their loss, EC and the Lady
Exporters are both in and
Santa Fe’s season is over.
El Campo and Brazosport
finished regular-season play
with identical 8-2 district
records and the Lady Indians
finised a game back at 7-3.
The tie forces a one-game
playoff between the Lady
’Birds and the Lady Ex-
porters and they’ll meet on a
neutral court at Terry Thurs-
day night to determine who
will go to the district playoffs
as the west zone champion
and who will go as the run-
nerup.
El Campo trailed 4-0 early
and 13-12 late in the third and
deciding game, but a spike by
Kriss Nilson and a spec-
tacular one-hand diving
return by Janet Long which
landed for a point while the
Lady Exporters were
celebrating gave Ell Campo
the momentum and a 14-13
lead. Nilson later served the
winning point.
A full recap of Friday’s
game and a volleyball playoff
preview will appear in
Wednesday’s Leader-News.
