Easter Week
As Easter week approaches our
thoughts turn to that of prayer and
fasting, as this marks the beginning
of what is known as Holy Week
which commemorates the passion
and death of our Lord, Holy Thurs-
day, Good Friday and Holy Saturday
are observed throughout the world
as days of pious meditation in pre-
paration for the glorious resurrec-
tion on Easter Sunday. In some of
the Eastern cities Good Friday has
been declared a holiday. Beginning
with Palm Sunday the Catholic
and Episcopal churches will hold
religious services most every day
during the week.

First Presbyterian Church
One of the most prominent things
in the matter of church work is now
imminent in the Greater Mercedes
Religious Census, in which all re-
ligious organizations are participat-
ing. The great canvass on the part
of voluntary census-takers will be
conducted on the afternoon of Sun-
day, April 4th, from three to six
p. m. Let everyone do his part.
Our church is entering heartily in-
to the plan outlined by our eGner-
al Assembly for raising the quota
assigned to us in the Presbyterian
Progressive Program, which this
year contemplates a budget of $4,-
000,000.00 for our entire church. Mr.
Ernest Meredith was appointed cam-
paign manager for the congregation.
He is placing the outline and details
of the plan before the congregations.
Tuesdav night the Woman’s Aux-
iliary gave a mose enjoyable supper
to the Every-Member-Canvassers ap-
pointed by the Session. At this sup-
per the general outline of the com-
ing canvass was presented. Those
appointed are: Mrs. Witmer and
Mrs. Trott; Messrs. Stotler, Watson,
Hadden, Irby, Garrison, Meredith.
Christner. The canvass of our con-
gregation will be made on the after-
noon of April 4th and all who wor-
ship with us are invited to partici-
pate and to remain at their homes
from 3 until 6 p. m. that day.
Wednesday, March 31st at the
manse there will be a gathering of
all the ladies of our congregation
from three to six o’clock. A pro-
gram is planned. Every woman is
earnestly invited and will be expect-
ed.

Somebody placed an extra bench
in the rear of the church. Much
obliged. We need an emergency pew
these days.
Sunday a collection will be taken
for European relief. Let us hope it
will reflect present cabbage prices.
“Deal thy bread to the hungry.”
The Endowment Fund Thermome-
ter printed in the Lutheran Witness
has almost reached the two million
mark. This fund is being raised by
laymen of the Synod of Missouri,
and other. states for the support Of
incapacitated veterans of the cross
and their widows and orphans. Of
the $600 subscribed here not all has
so far been collected. Those who
have not yet paid in the amount
subscribed by themselves will con-
fer a favor doing so at their
earliest convenience. The general
body assembles m Detroit in June,
when the completed three million
fund is to be placed at the disposal
of the church. If up to date you
have had no chance to contribute
for this worthy cause, rest assured
that any gift will be welcomed even
now.
In commemoration of the Savior’s
death a service will be held on Good
Friday at the regular time.
Palm Sunday is, as a rule. Con-
firmation Sunday. Do you remem-
ber the promise you made when you
were confirmed? Are you keeping
or breaking it? “Vow, any unto the
Lord your God.” Ps. 76,11.

Baptist Church
The attendance last Sunday at the
Sunday school just passed the one
hundred mark. Efforts are being
made to bring the regular attend-
ance up to one hundred and fifty.
The preaching services of last
Sunday both morning and evening,
were unusually well attended. Many
new faces were seen in the congre-
gations.
The young people are planning to
be host to the Valley Unions which
meet at Mercedes the second Sunday
in April. The work of the unions,
both juniors and senioi’s, is very
gratifying.
The local church stands ready to
co-operate with Rev. Gribble and
his good church in a series of evan-
gelic services that are to be conduct-
ed by Dr. Frank E. Fincher of Hous-
ton.
The local pastors are planning a
religious census of the community.
This is to be followed up by a
campaign to increase Sunday school
and church attendance.
The ladies met this week with Mrs
Anthony. Seventeen were in attend-
ance. ,

to this the Epworth Leaguers have
taken over the work of beautifying
