Wet Weather
Throws Ducks
Off ‘Quack’
VANCOUVER,
British Columbia (AP)
The ugliest June on
record has some water
birds thinking there
isn’t going to be a sum-
mer this year, so they’re
not getting in the mood
for nesting, a zoo
curator says.
Larry LeSage,
curator of the Stanley
Park zoo, said the rain
and dull skies have im-
paired the reproductive
instincts of ducks, geese
and swans, and they
aren’t nesting probably
thinking summer is over
or hasn’t begun, he said.
dune 1981 has been the
wettest and cloudiest
June in recorded Van-
couver history. The
146.3 hours of sunshine"
undercut the previous
low of 150.1 hours set in
1946, and the 4.9 inches
of rain beat the previous
record of 4.5 inches set
in 1956.
That might sound dan-
dy for ducks, but
LeSage says quacking
mallards are leaving
Stanley Park’s famed
Lost Lagoon in search of
drier ground, and zoo
animals accustomed to
•sunnier dlimates have
been kept indoors next
to the furnace.

During May
WASHINGTON (AP) -
Butter production declined
slightly in May, but the na-
tion’s output of cheese and
non-fat dry milk continued
to edge higher, the
Agriculture Department
says..
The department’s Crop
Reporting Board said that
butter production In May
was about 116.2 million
pounds. That was a decline
of less than 1 percent from
almost 116.9 million pounds
in April and also down
slightly from May of last
year.
Meanwhile, production of
American-type cheese rose
7 percent to 253.5 million
pounds in May from 237.5
million in April. Production
was up about 6 percent
from a year edrlier.
Non-fat dry milk output
was reported at 135.3
million pounds, up 10 per-
cent from April but about
the same as a year earlier. _
