Robert E. Lee students to attend debate camps this summer
Several Robert E. Lee High
School debaters will extend
their studies while attending
‘debate camps this summer.
James Fisher will attend the
Northwestern Coon-Hardy pro-
gram for seniors. Only 45 stu-
dents from throughout the
country will have this opportu-
nity.
Jeremy Troutman will attend
Michigan Classic for seniors
along with only 50 other stu-
dents from throughout the Unit-
ed States.
Jonathan Paul and Larry
Kubin will attend the Dart-
mouth program for Juniors.
This program accepts only 30
students from across the coun-
try.
Sophomore Russell Lorfing
will attend a program at Wake
Forest University, and Imtiaz
Shah, also a sophomore, will
attend the Michigan National
Debate Institute.
KIWANIS AWARDS
The Kiwanis Club of Bay-
town recently announced their
youth award winners for 1996.
The Sophomore of the Year
award went to Melody Meekins.
Sophomore Melissa Farr was
selected to attend the Hugh
O’Brien Youth Leadership Con-
ference at Rice University in
June.
The 1996 Scholar/Athlete
Award went to Abby Torres.
Three seniors were awarded
scholarships to the college of
their choice. They were Mary
Anna Hamel (Lee College),
Scott Kana (Texas A&M) and
Chad Corbitt (Texas A&M).

ceeds funded the youth awards.
GRADUATION
Graduation for the class of
1996 will be held at 8 p.m. May
24 at Stallworth Stadium.
Project Graduation will begin
at midnight at San Jacinto Mall
and will end at 6 a.m. on May
25. The purpose of Project
Graduation is to provide a safe,
drug and alcohol-free, celebra-
tion for graduating seniors.
VCA holds senior, awards banquets
KEY CLUB
The Key Club held its instal-
lation for the new 1996-97 offi-
cers and board members May 7.
Installed were: Claire Starz,
sophomore director; Brandon
Benoit, junior director; Jessica
Bagwell, senior director;
Angela Jared, project chairper-
son; Jennifer Laubach, social
chairperson; Justin Dagley,
treasurer; Angela Payne, secre-
tary; Allison Hanna, vice presi-
dent; and Jessica Foley, presi-
dent.
GIRLS STATE
REL is sending four Junior
girls to the Girls State conven-
tion June 11-21 at Texas
Lutheran College in Seguin,
Texas.
These students are Jessica
Bagwell, Jessica Foley, Allison
Hanna and Maggie Mendoza.
These girls are sponsored by
the American Legion Ladies town Evening Pilot Club, the
Auxilliary No. 323, the Bay- Kiwanis and the Rotary Club.

The Victory Christian Acade-
my junior class hosted the
senior faculty and students in a
banquet honoring the senior
class May 10.
The banquet was held at the
Hotel Galvez in Galveston. The
theme for the banquet was
.“Monkey Stuff.”
; The evening included the
seniors wills, written and read
by each of the seniors. Prophe-
sies that had been written by
the junior class to the seniors
were also read at the banquet.
A video that included pic-
tures from childhood to gradua-
tion was also shown.
The food was served buffet-
style and included shrimp, fish,
chicken and several other Poly-
nesian dishes.
AWARDS BANQUET
Victory held the fourth annu-
al awards banquet to honor stu-
dents that had both athletic and
academic achievements May
15.
The assembly was held at the
first Assembly of God church
in Highlands. The banquet was
funded by the Victory PTF.
The highest and most coveted
award at Victory, the Talon
award, was presented to Dawna
iBirtell, valedictorian.
T The Talon award is given to
Kelley
James
the senior who has best exem-
plified school spirit, respect for
authority, promptness, organi-
zational skills, humility, repen-
tance, congeniality, dependabil-
ity and enthusiasm.
The DAR good citizen awards
were presented to eighth
graders, Brooke Huey and Alex
DeLeon.
The ACSI Distinguished
Christian Students were
announced by Superintendent
Brian Carpenter. They included
Kelli Hines, Dawna Birtell,
Jeromey Anderson, Chad Gray,
Lori Jordan, Jennifer Prasek
and Kelley James.
The sports awards were
announced by girl’s coach
Michelle Calcote and boy’s
coach Roger Williams.
Each sports team voted for
one teammate that deserved to
receive an award in a certain
category.
The categories and winners in
football were: Most Valuable
Player,. Chad Gray; Most
Improved Player, Aby Farris;
and Spirit, Dave Moore.
The volleyball categories and
winners included: Most Valu-
able Player, Dawna Birtell;
Most Improved Player, Lori
Jordan; and Spirit, Cynda
Hutto.
■ The basketball categories and
winners were: Most Valuable
Players, Katie Beauchamp and
Aaron Laird; Most Improved
Players, Dawna Birtell, Girija
Bhargava and James Benton;
Spirit, Lori Jordan and Chuck
Wilson; and the Hustle award,
Jennifer Prasek and Jeromy
Anderson.
The cheerleader’s awards
were announced by sponsor
Laura Ives.
The categories and winners
were: Most Valuable Player,
captain Dayna Birtell; Spirit,
junior varsity winners, Lauren
Briles and Rachelle Weaton;
and varsity winner, Rachel
Moss.
The athletes of the years were
also announced at the banquet.
They were Jennifer Prasek and
Aaron Laird.
All the players were recog-
nized, as were the recipients of
all the individual teacher’s
classroom awards.
