Apple introduces fester
new compact computers
By DONNA MURPHY WESTON
The Associated Press
NEW YORK — Apple Com-
puter on Wednesday introduced.
faster, more compact and lower-
priced machines and a new oval-
shaped mouse to replace the com-
pany’s much-maligned round
mouse.
Apple also announced a new
palette of hues for its popular
candy-colored iMac computers.
The company’s first new
machines in nine months were
rolled out by chief executive Steve
Jobs as the Macworld Expo
opened Wednesday.
He said new versions of Apple’s
top-of-the-line G4 PowerMacs will
contain an industry first: two cen-
tral processing units instead of the
usual one, which will yield more
computing power. But the price
will stay the same.
In a design feat, Apple also
introduced the G4 Cube, which
miniaturizes all the features of a
mid-range G4 in an elegant 8-by-

8-inch machine. The G4 Cube,
which comes with clear tennis-
ball-size speakers, will be available
in August and sell for $1,799.
On the lower end of the price
spectrum, Jobs announced two
sub-$ 1,000 iMacs. One will sell
for $799.
The sleek egg-shaped machines
also will come in new colors: indi-
go, sage, ruby and snow.
Perhaps the most anticipated
product introduced Wednesday
was an oval-shaped optical mouse.
It has no roller ball, so it doesn’t
need cleaning and works on nearly
any surface. The entire surface of
the mouse works as the button and
fits any hand, making it easier for
children and the left-handed to use.
“We’re going from what some
think is the worst mouse in the
industry to the best,” Jobs boasted.
Mall outlet store to close at the end of year

BAYTOWN — The Palais Royal
Finale, a Palais Royal and Bealls
outlet store in San Jacinto Mall, will
close its doors by the end of the year.
“We expect to be open until
November, but we are in liquidation
now,” said Patti Barnett, assistant
store manager.
Barnett said the store’s inventory
has been bought by a liquidation
store, and the store is going out of
business.
Stage Stores Inc., owners of Palais
Royal, Bealls and Stage stores, filed
u We are not closing our Palais Royal store. The Palais Royal
Finale clearing house store is closing, and our Palais Royal store
is doing fine and will remain open. »
Reggie Gray
area director of marketing for San Jacinto Mai
for bankruptcy in June and is con-
solidating seven of its 43 Houston-
area locations into other local Palais
Royal stores by the end of the year.
“We are not closing our Palais
Royal store,” said Reggie Gray, area
director of marketing for San Jacinto
Mall. “The Palais Royal Finale
clearing house store is closing, and
our Palais Royal store is doing fine
and will remain open.”
Gray said San Jacinto Mall is one
of the only malls he knows of that
has two Palais Royal stores, and this
closing is no reflection on San Jacin-
to Mall.
Barnett said about 25 employees
work in the store, and they will be
offered other jobs wherever possible.
Stage Stores will close seven
Houston stores, including six Palais
Royal locations. Palais Royal loca-
tions closing in the Houston area are
downtown, Bissonnet, Mount Hous-
ton, Woodlands, West Oaks and
Woodway Village.
Nationally, the company will close
120 Stage, Bealls and Palais Royal
apparel stores as part of a court-
approved bankruptcy restructuring, a
company statement said.

AMR Corp. reports rise in quarter earnings
By DAVID KOENIG
TT: The Associated Press
DALLAS — AMR Corp., the par-
ent of American Airlines, said
Wednesday that record passenger
traffic and price increases pushed
second-quarter profit 32 percent
higher than last year despite rising
fuel prices.
Fort Worth-based AMR said oper-
ating profits rose to $285 million, or
$1.75 per share, from $216 million,
or $1.36 per share, in the same peri-
od last year.
That easily surpassed the $1.57
per share expectation of analysts
surveyed by First Call/Thomson
Financial.
The stronger-than-expected earn-
ings continued a trend, with United
Airlines, Houston-based Continental
and Dallas-based Southwest all beat-
ing Wall Street’s earnings expecta-
tions.
“The demand we saw in the sec-
ond quarter was really pretty extraor-
dinary,” said AMR chief financial
officer Tom Horton.
Horton said American does not
share United’s expectation of slowing
growth in the third quarter. United
has been forced to cancel many
nights because its pilots, locked in a
labor dispute with the largest carrier,
are refusing overtime assignments.
The Associated Press
FORT WORTH — A settlement
has been reached in the first case
filed under a Texas law that allowed
malpractice lawsuits against HMOs.
The family of Joseph Plocica sued
his HMO after the 68-year-old man
committed suicide in July 1998,
hours after his discharge from a 13-
day stay at a psychiatric hospital
The family contended that NYL-
Care 65 insisted that Plocica be dis-
charged against his doctor’s recom-
mendation. The lawsuit also named
NYLCare 65’s medical director and
the company that managed its psychi-
atric benefits as defendants.
Settlement terms were not dis-
closed, but none of the defendants
admitted wrongdoing, the Fort Worth
Star-Telegram reported
The Plocica family’s lawsuit, filed
in October 1999, was the first under a
1997 Texas law that held HMOs
liable for malpractice if their deci-
sions about medical coverage resulted
in injury to a patient

At a glance
The Plocica family’s
lawsuit, filed in October
1999, was the first under a
1997 Texas law that held
HMOs liable for malpractice
if their decisions about
medical coverage resulted in
injury to a patient.
for October, both sides said the law
has already made managed-care
insurers in Texas less likely to over-
rule a physician’s recommended
treatment
“The clients’ main interest was to
use the statute in a way that was pro-
ductive,” said George Parker Young, a
Fort Worth lawyer who represented
Plocica’s family. He said publicity
about the lawsuit and tiie uncertainty of
a trial led the family to drop its lawsuit
“Given the attention it’s gotten, the
decision had to be, could we gain that
much more by trying the case?”
Young said.
Jerry Patterson, executive director
of the Texas Association of Health
Plans, said the decision to drop the
lawsuit indicates the Plocicas’ case
was weak. He said the man had “a
long history of major depression”
and previous suicide attempts.
“The case was, if you’d only kept
the guy in a mental health facility for
tiie rest of his life, he’d be alive today.
But at some point he had to be
released under Medicare’s benefit
limits,” Patterson said
NYLCare 65, now owned by Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Texas, is a
Medicare HMO. Under Medicare,
beneficiaries are entitled to a lifetime
benefit of 190 days of psychiatric
treatment.
Patterson, Young and Rocky
Wilcox, general counsel of the Texas
Medical Association, said that the
lawsuit and several others filed later
under the 1997 law have affected
managed care in Texas.
“The doctors say they feel they’re
able to do things they weren’t able to
do before” the law took effect,
Wilcox said
Tech earnings
send stock
prices down
The Associated Press
NEW YORK— Stock prices
tumbled Wednesday, as disap-
pointed investors vented their
wrath on a slew of technology
companies whose second-quar-
ter financial results fell short of
expectations.
The Dow Jones industrial
average closed down 43.84 at
10,696.08, according to prelimi-
nary calculations. Broader stock
indicators were also lower. The
Standard & Poor’s 500 index
was down 14.98 at 1,478.76, and
the Nasdaq composite index was
down 123.77 at 4,053.40.
The primary catalyst for the
selloff was disappointing quar-
terly results from two bell-
wethers —Microsoft and Apple.
Microsoft fell $5,375 to
$73,125 and investors punished
Apple after the computer maker
beat Wall Street’s earnings
expectations by a mere penny.
Apple’s stock was off $4,562 at
$52,688.
