PAY OR GLORY
(Tort Worth lttcord.)
Should college men lie encouraged
to piny professional football? 'Flic
perennial question rises again in con-
nection with the alleged offer to
Grange qf Illinois to turn profes-
sional as soon ns the season closes.
Grange Is probably the most widely
known football pluvcr in the t'nlted
States. His personal fame has at-
tracted many thousands of people to
the games he has plajed In. Would
he do well to become a professional?
Would such action be advantageous
or disadvantageous to Illinois Univer-
sity? Would it help or harm foot-
ball? Would It clarify or distort the
public view of college education in
general?
Wc do not believe for a moment
that any moral Issue Is Involved. Pro-
fessional football Is as legitimate as
bond selling or writing for a news-
paper. Nor do we think it would
have any apprccliblc effect one wa
or another on the public view of cith-
er Illinois or college educalton in gen-
eral. It seems to us so far as voung
Mr. Grange is concerned wholly a
personal question though if he had a
good season this Pail he could prob-
ably make more money In the movies.
The real questions seem to us to
be whether professional football ad-
vances the interest of the game and
offers a real career to skillful voung
collegians.
That professional baseball is good
for the game and does offer college
men a real career we think there Is
no doubt the delightful develop-1
tnent of baseball is almost wholly due
to the professional influence; and
Eddie Collins and George Sislcr show
what a chance it offers college men.
Is professional football different?
Yes it is. Professional football
does not develop the game. All the
new wrinkles come out of the colleges.
The professional coaching is not as
serious nor the play as earnest as in
the college game. Ultimately it may
become so as it has in Kngland in the
English tvpc of the game. Hut the
ihances ore against its ever becoming
so. 'Ibe requirements of the game
scarcely permit that it .should. The
spectators simply cannot tell whether
plavcr is doing his best or not. Even
his fellow plavcrs cannot tell. Only
he and the coach know and even the
coach may not always be sure. So
professional games though the aver-
age of potential skill may he higher
than in college games tend to gen-
eral listlessness in comparison.
And for most men a professional
football rarrer must be short. Acci-
dents and the wearing down of nerv-
ous energy make this inev Itable. More-
over the vrevlty of the season and
the comparative infrcquncy of games
reduce the possibility of high pay.
Therefore few college men can hope
to find in professional football any
;ueb opportunity as the Collinses and
Skiers find In baseball.
Our conclusion is that for most
train for llavlor University wher
two birds will be killed with one stone.
'Hie Baptist Students Union will be
attended and the Howard Piivnu
Yellow Jackets will ph H.ivlor Uni-
versity. There is a great reflecting spirit in
a special train leaving Howard Pajnc
College mid iin everlasting impression
can he tiiidc if the details are e irricd
out as planned by the officials arrang-
ing the train.
It Is hoped by the offici lis tint
every student who goes on the special
will not go for either of the events
alone. I ct him go In true Howard
Pane spirit and take In both the
events.
'Ihc H. S. t". convention will be a
great Inspiritloii to students who
take In the sessions of the tm cling.
It will assist them in resolving to
nturn to the Howard Pajnc campus
and lead a bctter'llfe for Christ. It
