As a nutter of tact there is no use to wait until
.lunuury 1 tcry year to make it resolution to do .1
certain thing. There should be inouh -vv ill power h
the per-oti to sie that vluteu-r he or she wants to do
H done.
The ago old resolution to slud bird Is nn ajre-nlet
one but one thit Is hard to beat. I'residcnt (iidhnl.l
will agree uith this statement. College is beginning to
get too much like the collige comics piiturc It. tt ap-
pears that boj? and girls and le.ning high school and
go(ji(t to college bectusu their trirnds are and hecausi
football if pla)ed in college. The farce first fostered
by the comics ot the bragging by the students ot the
classes they h.-uc "cut" is becoming n reality and U
now the truth. It n student can get by without hand-
ing In written work be thinks be is smart does not mind
telling; his friends about it nnd laughs to bis own diner
self because he is putting it oer the prof so easily.
The poor fool is putting It over himself. He came to
college to study. Instead of making resolutions every
Sew "Year morning there should be .1 resolution eer
morning to study harder nnd harder during that day.
"I'lmt's what the student is coming to college for. He
might us well get something of what is due him.
A resolution to stop the cutting of classes is not 1
bud one and those who have promised themselves that
they would cut no more classes innde n good resolution.
It will be a better one at the end of the term if they
can say they have lived up to it.
It is not too late to resolve nnd nothing would be
more appropriate during the first week in the New- Yiar
to pledge yourself that you would attend church and
Sunday school every Sabbath day during the iur.
Especially is this appropriate during this week which
bfl-s been designated bj the different religious organiza-
tions on the campus as "Go To Church Sund.ij" week.
Ilesolutions are grtut things. Don't break them.
Live up to them. Hcsohe stronger and deeper as the
temptations arise and make vnurself realize what ou
should do. When ou know- what jou should do nnd
do it there will be no need for resolutions. I'ntil jou
do tb.it make good your resolutions.
IIASKKTBALI. SEASON IS HKHK.
The basketball is being tossed around again and
Tuesday night the Howard 1'ajne Ytllow .lackits opui
p in their first tilt of the siason. To win that p.inie-
Howsrd Pajne is going to have to have more than the
tlipport of the student body. The candidates lor the
team are out of training being away during the Cbri-t-Bss
holidays and will hardly be sittltd down by the
time the rcfrec blows the whistle.
"Howard Payne expects every man to do his duty."
Howard Payne students have to do their duty toward
(bis basketball team. Were it a football game one could
hear little tlse outside the class rooms in gossip. Basket -bull
is a great game ami should he taken as seriously
as football. The men train harder than they do for
football. They go into it just as hard to win tor How-
ard Payne in basketball as they do football
Get behind that bunch. Entourage them. Get tin-
old. Jacket spirit that "Howard Payne's got a Y( How-
Jacket that's i Mr met deteat" and rally around that
game when they take the floor.
In past years basketball hits been taken as it comes
and goes. Students go to the game to be going some-
where. Get over to that gymnasium next Tuesday night and
yell for those Jackets. Keep up the light. Don't lag
when the team does. That's what makes them get be-
hind. -Keep up the fight and Daddy Amis will give you
S fighting team that ou will he proud of either in vic-
tory or' defeat.
. "lie a considerate winner and n good loser."
IT'S DOING GOOD
Football is being cussed. It takes up too much time
and keeps the students from their studies the old heads
say. Too much money Is spent on the game. The sport
in being over-emphuslted they believe and point out that
students are thinking more football than they are their
subjects. ..Football is being used as an example because
the season has just ended and the talk nn this game
it; still i (tu; air. They believe tin- same about the other
major sports
A A 1 Howard Payne student in his home town during
Use Cbrtotau holiday stumbled into one of the mer-
chants' of the place and In shaking hands was asked bow-
be liked school.
"Fta-" the Howard Payne man replied "We've got
great record this .year.. Didn't lose but one football
Lay hi association. Lwa iikc we win nave a goou

Sf
"Well I may be nn old fogy on the subject"' the
merchant answered "but 1 do not believe In athletics.
We pliycd baseball fluting recess nnd at noon when I
went to school and never missed a dnv from our studies.
The colleges are spending loo mueji money on the spurl
too."
'ihe Honnid I'.ijne student shot back a pretty good
explanation and had the old man com ci led before he-
left. He showed that the sports really did not take the
time ava from the students but gave them tin oppor-
tunity to use their time. Practicing saves loafing devel
oping them at the same time. 'Ihe majority of students
rarel) ever study in the afternoon it whs pointed out
but use the night hours llojs especially. On trips it
v-us shown how the athletes take their books and have
instructors on the trip 01 in ike up their work in c.tr.-i
se.slnns upon llulr return it is a rire oeimrencc whin
a team misses more than two davs trom ilasscs.
As far as spending money is concerned football and
the other sports are becoming 1 money 111. iking proposi-
tion. Attend nice at lO.WK) and l.'i.dmi people at 'I'. I.
A. A. games are going to make money for the smaller
schools at least p ly athletic espensis.
