An Aransas Pass man whose left arm
was severed in a Jan. 19 adcident aboard
a shrimp boat off the coast of Freeport
has hired a Baytown attorney to repre-
sent him in a $5 million lawsuit against
the owner of the shrimp boa)*.
Richard Carl Burleson, 4J, is seeking
$4.5 million in damages and $500,000 in
maintenance and cure benefits from
Wesley G. Mowles. owner of the shrimp
boat. Captain Wes, according toattomey
Glenn Vickery.
The suit was filed Monday- in the
Federal Court in Galveston.
•This irthe type of claim that comes
under the federal jurisdiction in that it is
an admiralty lawsuit arising under the
statutes of the United States commonly
referred to as the Jones.Act,” Vickery
said.
The Jones Act provides that recovery
for seamen while aboard vessels on the
sea are entitled to money damages
resulting from bodily injury and that
their claims are to be heard in the
.federal courts of the U.S.
The suit alleges that Burleson was
working aboard the 67-foot shrimp boat,
lifting a load of shrimp onto the boat
when he was jerked into a winch, which
severed his arm and crushed his leg and
back. ,
The severed arm was packed in ice
and flown with Burleson to John Sealy
