'heir children are immunized
when registering them at school.
there is no state law that
schools can ban children from
classes for not having the proper
immunizations, Hayes said.
“That’s up to each school, but
most have a 30-day grace period
for people to get caught up on
immunizations,” she said.
Parents should check with
their child’s school, Hayes said.
* Immunizations are available
at doctors offices, health clin-
ics and fairs and county health
departments. ,
Stanley suggested that Texas
lags behind the nation for a
number of reasons, including
“the size, the number of unin-
sured, the level of poverty,
immigration issues” and the
large population of migrant
families whose records often
get lost.
The Health Department
began a push in May 2000 to
encourage parents to get their
children immunized. The plan
calls for giving health-care
-providers more information on
immunizations; encouraging
community members to talk to
young mothers about vaccina-
tions; providing a statewide
Web-based registry for chil-
dren’s records; enhancing the
Health Department’s collabo-
ration with programs like
Medicaid; and advising doc-
tors lo be vigilant about alert-
ing parents when a shot is
needed.
The CDC survey was based
on data from late 1997, 1998

and early 1999, so any effects
from the campaign would not
be considered, she said.
“It’s not something you can
measure overnight,” Stanley
said. “I think in the long run it
will make a difference.”
Government health officials
recommend that by age 2, chil-
dren receive about 20 doses of
vaccine against 11 diseases.
Stanley noted that the CDC
numbers do not mean that 30
percent of Texas children have
had no shots. They may have

Larry Robinson and Will Walker.

Simmons and Michael Urban.
Family members have

members who cared for Mrs.
missed only one, she said.
Stanley’s goal is for 90 per-
cent of the state’s children to be
fully immunized by 2010.
There’s a perception that the
diseases no longer exist, so
immunizations are unneces-
sary, she said, adding, that per-
ception is false.
