by this time you have all.
Well after the first siege of blistered tonsils from gaping at
the 1938 crop of frosh beauts one is somewhat bewildered. Things
and stuff don't come so profusely and I'm in a whirl as the first
paragraph will witness.
I'm sorry to disillusion you chum but this little Wheeler doll

some time ago when several
nations started increasing their armies and building war ships

peace. At the time we wondered if they were preparing for peace
or "pieces" and it looks as though this question will be answered
any day now. the scrimmages in spain and china seem to be slip-

EDITORIAL COMMENT
Will Defeat Slow Down Our Spirit?
"What is dcfeat7 Nothing but education; nothing but the first
step to something better." Wendell Phillips.
Has anything happened to that grand old enthusiasm that
has become a tradition with us that wonderful something
that wc call the '-Howard Payne Spirit?" Has your attitude
changed since the Yellow Jackets took the field last Friday night
against the powerful Eagles from North Texas State Teachers
College? If the defeat which we suffered has caused the sharp
edge ot your enthusiasm to become dulled just stop right now and
shako the cobwebs out of your brain and get into the right attitude
about this thing. We have become so accustomed to seeing the
Yellow Jackets win and win and win until it may have been quite
a shock to some of us to see them have such poor luck against the
veteran aggregation Irom Denton.
The game which we lost last Friday night can not slow down
the traditional zeal and enthusiasm which has characterized How-
ard i-ayno athletic teams and student bodies for nearly half a
century. We can learn just one thing from that game that is
that we need just a little more of that good old spirit and tingling
desire to win wnich we call "The Howard Payne Spirit." Back the
team.
Have you been guilty of criticizing the Yellow Jackets because
they diil not turn out the kind of game that you thought they
should '.' bliume on you if you have. Coaches Keaton and McCarver
and tne lellow Jackets did all that was humanly possible not only
during the game but lor two weeks of training which preceded
the opening encounter.
We believe that the Yellow Jackets are capable of playing as
good a brand oi ball as anybody's team and if they were not up to
par last week it was the fault of no one it takes a test like that
to lind out just where the weak points are and to prepare a team
tor a more successlul future.
Let lis all just keep yelling "Beat San Marcos" and every
other team that comes our way ; let's get the chills going up and
clown our spine and maybe cry a little bit when we sing the "Line."
Let's back the Jackets more than ever before and show them that
we are not just "fair weather" friends. Let's get behind those
boys and see them through to another grand and glorious year!
Attend Pep Rallies and get a little spirit in your bones and let's get
going.
Yellow Jacket Your College Paper
If you are a new student of Howard Payne or a new sub-
scriber to this paper perhaps you would like for us to take a few
moments out to tell you just what this weekly spasm is and what its
purpose is. The "YELLOW JACKET" is the official weekly pub-
lication of H. P. C. and is the voice of the student body on the cam-
pus. Like all organizations at Howard Payne the "YELLOW
JACKET" is a democratic institution and endeavors to express
the truly representative opinion of the students of this college.
The editor and business manager of this paper are elected
by popular vote of the student body in the annual student-officer
election each spring. The other members of the staff are chosen
by them and are so selected as to give the publication a diversified
personnel and a truly representative cross-section of the student
body. Every phase of school activity is given its due share of
publicity and support. Every member of the faculty and student
idy ot this school has the privilege and the opportunity to speak
nnion or contribute his journalistic outbursts at any and

We still have several holdover romances from high school.
Wonder how long they will last?
that the staff is open to suggestions for improving the yellow
jacket take note that the suggestion offered to change the name
to the "howard payne daily blow published weekly" was voted
down in a recent meeting of the staff members someone else sug-
gested that the paper could be improved by selecting an entirely
new staff the staff also voted this motion down we will also be
glad to correct some of the errors because we know that even the
better papers sometime make the mistake for example the fol-
lowing appeared somewhere: "mrs. smith is the mother of four
children one by her first husband one by her second and one by
adoption." one of the subscribers phoned in and demanded a re-
count. everyone will be glad to hear
that this column will run a prediction department each week as is
our policy we will try to do something different from the usual
run. so throwing caution to the wind we predict that the hardin-
simmons cowhands will defeat daniel baker 27 to 0 on last Satur-
day night in the second game our yellow jackets will receive
second place in a game with north texas teachers score will be
about 13 to 0 and the game is to be last friday night.
if convenient we always keep
our promises so here is the horriblescope for you who made your
first personal appearance in the month of September prof baloney
states that you have a calm mind merciful disposition and are
honest in your dealings your will power is usually good but you
often allow your best friends to influence you. little prosperity is
shown for early life but you will find success later in life possibly
as an inventor if you marry more than once the second will
prove very unfortunate caution is suggested to avoid accidents
and heavy losses and don't forget you have many enemies to
keep an eye on. use your great powers of persuasion to the best
advantage.

filler-inner is already out of bounds the invention mentioned last
week is finished and is a big success except for one thing it
don't work we know you can hardly wait to hear what the inven-
tion is but due to so much space you'll have to wait until next week.
Paid Publicity Dept. For merely a hamburger coke or milk
shake you too can be the Catch of the Campus. Some of our clients
are now definitely B. M. 0. C.'s (Big Men on Campus). Claude
Knieff who skyrocketed to fame as Public Dope No. 1 through
the build-ups in this column when interviewed testified as fol-
lows : quote The Candid Campus Popularity Promoting Agency
Inc. will definitely place you before the public. I owe my tremend-
ous popularity all to their untiring efforts in my behalf unquote.
I sure will be glad when that special takes off for Cowtown.
Candid Campus Cracks will return to you at this same hour next
Thursday over this same network. Goodbye and stuff and I don't
mean you.
