WIN IS NINTH TEXAS CONFERENCE
PENNANT FOR HPC IN 13 SEASONS
HP Unscored On
In Circuit Play
Imprcsslveness to an already out-
standing gridiron record at Howard
Payne College was added by the
Yellow Jackets of 1038.
When the Jackets defeated Soutli
western University 7 to 0 Thanks-
giving Day in this year's champion-
ship battle they captured their third
conference title in a row and their
eighth undisputed championship in
the 13 seasons since the conference
was started in 1926. In 1931 How-
ard Payne shared the crown with
Hardin-Slmmons.
Cowboys Win First
Hardin-Slmmons University (then
Simmons) won the first champion-
ship In 1926 defeating the Yellow
Jackets 12 to 6 in the champion-
ship game. Southwestern Univer-
sity marched Into the throne room
in 1937. The Pirates' 25-26 victory
over Howard Payne in that year was
the last one registered by the George-
town team In Its annual games with
the local Baptists.
St. Edward's won the champion-
ship in 1933 and Austin College in
1935 the years that the Jackets fin-
ished in the runner-up position.
McAdoo Keaton serving his fourth
year as head roach at Howard Payne
became an assistant under Joe Bailey
Cheaney In the 1928 the first year
that the Jackets marched to the top
in conference. Keaton became head
coach in 1935 when Cheaney began
similar duties with Southwest Texas
State Teachers College at San Mar-
cos. Losses Scarce Under Keaton
In the four seasons that Keaton
has directed the Jackets they have
not lost- a name to anv of the nres-
not lost a game to any oi me pres
ent members of conference and in
his eleven years on the athletic staff
they have lost but three conference
games.
The losses were to Austin College
(13-7) In 1931 St. Edward's (7-0) In
1933 and Hardin-Slmmons (14-0) In
1935.
The loss to Hardin-Slmmons
In 1935 counted In the conference
race despite the fact that the Cow-
boys did not compete for the title
that year. Howard Payne was the
only conference team that played
the Cowboys the year they embark-
ed upon their "major" football cam-
paign. 11 Year Percentage .881
Sixty-three conference games have
been played by Howard Payne since
Keaton joined the athletic staff of
his alma mater. The Jackets have
won 51 of these games lost three
and tied nine for a percentage of .881.
The ties were as follows: Simmons
(7-7) 1030; Austin College (0-0 7-7
0-0) 1933 1934. 1935; A. C. C. (0-0
0-0) 1933 1938; Trinity (0-0) 1935;
St. Edward's (13-13) 1933 McMurry
(0-0) 1930.
In the 100 conference and non-
conference games played in this
eleven-year period Howard Payne
has won 79 lost 15 and tied 12 for
a percentagp of .801
t Happened in 1938
Although the Jackets scored only
57 points against their seven con-
ference opponents tills season they
offset their "below normal" offen-
plve work by a crippled backfield
With a defense that held opponents
Jn the circuit scoreless a record that
should go down as one of the greatest

This Rosj Bowl Affair has
been quite a disappointment to
the followers of the Southwest

they are rated above the boys

Two grout elevens marched onto
the Yellow Jacket Stadium greens-
ward heie Thanksgiving afternoon.
They met and played sixty minutes
of lootball. Two great teams left the
field as the lust gun was fired still
on comparatively even terms yet
one just a shade greater a 7-degrce
shade left the gridiron a little more
jubilantly it had just won the Texas
Confeience football championship of
the 103S session - its ninth circuit title
In thliteen schedules the third loop
win in a tow and the eighth undis-
puted Conference title since the con-
feience wns started having shared
tin one toom honots with Hardin- Sim-
mons University in 1931.
It was a great day for the protages
of Coaches McAdoo Keaton and "Nig"
McCntver as the Brownwood Baptist
boys succeeded in doing the impos-
sible. Theii victoiy was impressive
fiom the stntistlcul viewpoint as they
piled up neatly twice as many first
downs and yards rushing and nearly
thrice the yauls on passes. On the
Held the Jackets appealed to be on
fairly even tetms with the Pirates
neither team either gaining or giving
giotind with the former standing out
bately above the latter.
WILSON IS HURT
A shadow however darkened the
brilliancy of the Howard Payne vic-
toiy. Waymon Wilson still favoring
an early seuson knee Injury paid a
stiff price in putting the ball In scor-
ing position with a 25-yard run. An-
otliei knee injury was sustained which
will keep him from the Hnrdln-Slm-tnons
game today. Wilson was assls-
ed fiom the turf when cartilages In
his right knee were totn. Playing a
haul-driving nnd sincere game during
the afternoon especially on punt re-
ceiving and returns Wilson's exit
fiom the game added fire to the re-
maining Jackets and sparked their
lone ttip to pay dirt.
MINOR THROWS WINNING PASS
A holiday crowd of almost 5000
saw the temuining touchdown twin
James Minor (Wilson being sidelined
by his knee injury a few seconds pre-
vious) citcle wide at right end for
a spectacular open field run tradition-
al of the "Tahokn Tetror" but drop
buck sucking in the Pirate forward
in close then fire a completed for-
waul to Ourland Terrell who slipped
between a couple of Bucs to take
the pigskin from their waiting hands.
Chris Sundcrmun a lud that can't
miss und who was waiting on the side-
lines icady to win the ball game with
a place kick should the Jackets fall
on this third down was rushed into
the game to add the final point of the
title tussle.
Crippled by eaily season Injuries
that hlndeied Wilson Minor and Bel-
yeu and kept' Frank Fisher from the
game the rest of the schedule win-
ning the conference for the Jackets
this year wns not an easy task. Yet
they made up their minds to do their
best play ouch game as it presented
itself and found victory several times
when it wasn't there. The Jackets
could not this season pile up scores
they had to be satisfied with 57 points
in confeience wutfare winning four
games by 7 to 0 margins. It was that
all -tight defense fashioned by Coach-
es Keaton and McCarver that met the
emeigency und held the circuit op-
ponents on offense.
