Jackets Lose Close One To Crowell
Independents In Last Game Of Season
By Bailey
Slowing down In the last half
the Yellow Jackets lost their
final game of the season 4G-42.
A frantic crowd of loyal students
kept begging the Jackets to
overcome what was at one time
a 9 point deficit. The boys did
their best and did manage to
come within one point of tying
up the old ball game. But
Graves Crowcll's substitute
guard got "hot" and the Inde-
pendents wound up four points
ahead of our fighting Jackets.
Howard Payne started slowly.
But after the first ten minutes
HP was going like a house afire.
They built up a ten point lead
and it looked like the game was
on ice. But they had reckoned
without the aid of Graves who
suddenly began hitting them
from all angles. When the score
was added up he had made 17
points.
Jimmy Kight HP's all-confer"
once candidate turned in his
usual excellent offensive game.
He was high scorer with 18
points. This was probably his
last college game. And he made
every minute count while he was
out there.
The game was featured by
beautiful long shots and poor
teamwork on both sides. Several
times boys of both teams were
in the clear and if they had re-
ceived the ball it would have
been a sure two points. Strick-
land Moring and Gibbs sank
"beauts." But the Jackets just
failed to sink enough of them.

Time Out
With "Baldy"
This last week Howard Payne
received a shock when their
head coach McAdoo Kcaton re-
signed to go to SMU as assist-
ant coach. Kcaton had been at
SMU while Howard Payne did
not have football but when
they were starting back football
he returned to start with spring
training. He received a perman-
ent offer from SMU and return-
there. We hate to lose McAdoo
Keaton but we say that we wish
him the best of luck.
After the leaving of Keaton
the trustees lost no time in try-
ing to secure a man to take his
place. They have made the offer
to Joe Bailey Chcaney and of-
ficially have made no statement
on whether or not he will come
here as head coach. Let's hope
that he docs cause he is a great
coach and a good man. He was
here as coach before Kcaton
came to the school but we will
all remember him as one of the
referees of the Basketball tour-
nament held in the gym this
year.
While on the subject of foot-
ball most of you have noticed
that some boys are out now just
getting the muscles ready for
spring training. It sure looks
good to see some boys take such
an Interest that they come out
to get ready for spring training.
It will do them good and they
will enjoy the company of any
other boys who wish to come out
with them.
Don't any of you softball
stars forget to turn in your
name.
This last weekend was a very
busy one for the athletes of
Brownwood. Howard Payne
sent a group of trackmen to the
Laredo Border Olympic. They
went with the determination to
win even though they were run-
ning against bigger colleges and
universities.
The high school sent both a
track team to Laredo and a bas-
ketball team to Austin to enter
in the state high school tourna-
ment. They played Amarillo in
their first game last Friday
night.
Softball players turn in your
names now!
The track team this week will
make a trip to Cowtown to enter
in the Fat Stock Show Meet.
This is one of the main track
meets of the state and also of
the nation. We shall have a
bunch of trackmen entering in
this meet and we hope that they
will do their best to win the
meet. It may look impossible but
they can if enough of them will
win the individual events.
Students your Student Coun-
cil asked Wyat Graves and I to
lead In the intra-mural softball
Uaguc. We will do all we can
but It is left up to you to put it
over. If you will play on one of
the teams please turn in your
name as soon as possible. This
is for your entertainment so do
what you can to put it over. If
it is not possible for you to play
talk it up and come out to th"
games.

Let's Forget It
And Just Walk
Back in my days of youth
when there were no limits on
driving I was cruising around
town knocking off about 30
when "Prof" Blow informs me
that my wheels are turning. It
scares me so I stop my vehicle
out I get and just as I thought
they were as still as they were
before I started. Just when I
think I am ready for a take off
(something I always dread be-
cause I never know which way
I am going to go) I hear the
motor whispering its last tire-
some words. "Crank me." With a
twist of the wrist the motor be-
gan to sing "How dry I am!"
Stopping at the first service
station I put in two buckets of
water six quarts of oil and
three gallons of gas.
On driving my "crate" from
the station I get into a line of
cars that seem to be going only
one way. What do I do? I go
that way too I didn't mind be-
cause they seemed like a nice
group of boys and girls. Arc
they going to a picnic I hope?
Oh no it must be a "fire" be-
cause they all passed me so fast
I pulled off the road to see if
I had accidentally gotten my
"merry Oldsmobile" In reverse.
They kept gaining speed until
one of the bunch discovered
mat nis car wouldn't try so
turned around and headed
back.
Me and my car built for
parking only just did escape
down an old side road called.
"Rabbit Run Faster Here They
Come Again!"
It seems as I was speeding
down the narrow trail I dusted
them out one by one and head-
ed straight for my destination
And suddenly looming before
me was a sign which n ad "Junk
Yard Just Ahead."

Srownwood Lions Defeat Waco Twice
o Enter State Tournament
After defeating Waco in the
second game of the bi-distrlct
series Brownwood enters in
their first state tournament in
12 years. It was in 1934 when
the Lions made their last ap-
pearance in the state meet but
Brownwood did have some good
teams since then.
Coach Charles Chrane carried
a squad of 10 boys to the state
tournament last week-end and
met Amarillo in the first game
on Friday night. Among the 10
was Al Langford Lion forward
and John Harris Lion center
who have played four years of
basketball for Brownwood High.
Several special buses of fans
followed the Lions to Austin to
see them play their game with
Amarillo in the Gregory gymna-
sium. o
Your Red Cross
Must Carry On
Your Red Cross must carry on
in peace as in war because . . .
Servicemen and women still
in uniform those overseas with
the armies of occupation those
yet to be discharged continue
to need Red Cross clubs snack
bars and recreation centers
and the friendly assistance of
understanding Red Cross work-
ers. Veterans and their depen-
dents look to the Red Cross for
assistance in solving problems
that often slow adjustment to
civilian life.
Hospitalized servicemen and
veterans need help to face the
tedious hours of convalescence.
Disaster victims the homeless
of war-ravaged lands and
others in distres need Red Cross
help.
A sailor convalescing from
burns that seared his legs and
arms as he leaped from his
shattered flame-licked ship
summed up the Red Cross ap-
peal. "The Red Cross has never let
us clown" he said. "In the hos-
pital they said it was plasma
that kept me alive. It was a Red
Cross woman who wrote the
folks about it and told them not
to worry. It was a Red Cross
worker who helped my wife
when the allotments didn't ar-
rive on time after I was report"
ed missing. It was a Red Cross
girl who brought me those mag-
azines over there ... So don't let
the Red Cross down."

Cross Fund Campaign.
