(By International News Service.)
Paris, Dec. 17,—The French police
have just succeeded in rounding up
eleven members of a gang of burglars
known jjy the curious name of the
“Bande des Mhgistrats,” whose
sphere of operations was in Paris and
the outskirts, and whose victims were
principally jewelers and silversmiths.
Their method was original. After
securing a haul they disposed of the
second-hand dealers known to be
without scruples about the origin of
the goods they bought. A few days
later two members of the gang repre-
senting themselves as police officials,
and armed with cleverly faked war-
rants, would call on the dealer,, ex-j
plaining that the police had arrested j
___ the thtaaro*, who con#—4 to Us-t-l
ing sold him certain stolen articles, a]
full description of which they gave. 1
They then proceeded to search the!
shop in, order to Identify the missing
articles, confiscating all the jewelry
and silver found, and attaching nu-
merous official seals to the shop be-
fore leaving with their booty. Their
pretension to be connected with the
law was strengthened by tbe fact that
one of their members -really was a
police inspector, vho had recently
joined the force, probably with the
idea of facilitating the ^qrork of the
g«ng.
SECRET
The secret of life from a bnsines point of view is to spend less
than you earn and deposit the difference. The average person’s com-
fort in advanced years is secured only by living within one’s income
and laying by something regularly before spending, not simply deposit-
ing what ih left aftqr spending. It may be necessary to practice a lit-
tle self-denial to lay by money from a moderate income, but, after sill,
is it self-denta) when the result is a personal benefit, independence and
future comfbrt ? Be successful and build your success on an account
in tills bank.

Valuable Rice Crop.
Uly Assoc luted Pi ess.;
Beaumont, Texas, Dec. 18.—Four
thousand; bags of rice, for approxi-1
mately $14.50 a bag, were sold' this
season by j. A. Simpson, a farmer
near Pine Island. This is believed
to be the highest price ever paid for
rice.
Simpson not only sold his rice for
the highest price of the season but
succeeded in harvesting 100 per cent
crop, wfaen many farmers suffered
losses and harvested rice- .which
brought much lower prices. This tie
accomplished by a plan which cost
him a dollar an acre, and permitted
all the rice to be harvested without
touching the water.%
Instead of cutting the rice and drop-
ping the shocks from the binder into
the water, Simpson used a raft-like
contrivance called a “stone-boat”
which was drawn along with the bind-
er. The bound shocks were dropped
•pn this boat and when the boat Was
loaded it was hauled to dry ground.
When the rice was threshed it was
accomplished without the grain havr
ing touched water. This, it is said,
resulted in Simpson’s crop being rated
first class quality and commanding
the highest price.
Simpson’s plan of harvesting is
comparable to the Japanese method,
farmers say, and may lead to a more
careful system of rice farming here.
