Senate holds first
The student government
office was filled to capacity for
the first senate meeting of the
year last Tuesday evening.
Student Association President
Larry Sparks conducted a two-
hour meeting at which senators
discussed various topics.
Sparks welcomed the group
and then turned the legislative
body into a committee of the
whole. He then announced
various committee ap-
pointments and the senate
approved all of them.
Appointed as Supreme Court
Justice is Rick Davis. Elections
Committee Chairman will be
Robert Cochran. Phyllis Gandy
will chair the Food Committee
and Johnnye Rankin will head
the Fine Arts Committee. Other
committee appointments in-
cluded: Social Linda Gall
Owens; Publicity Sheryl
Worley; and Homecoming
Vicky Williams. Ruby Martinez
will be in charge of the chapel
program for Homecoming.
Next Sparks appointed a
committee to update the old
S.A. constitution which was
revised last year. The com-
mittee will add all the amend-
ments and changes to the for
mer constitution.
Next on the agenda was an
announcement by Dean Cheryl
Reese concerning the upcoming
leadership seminar which will
be held on September 21. Dean
Reese explained that the
seminar is for the benefit of all
senate members and
organization heads on campus.
The leadership seminar will be
held in conjunction with a
parliamentary procedure
seminar which Dr. Veda Hodge
has prepared. Dr. Hodge will be
on campus on September 90
with two registered
parliamentarians to conduct the
seminar.
The question of telephones for
every room was again raised.
Sparks reported that according
to administration sources the
possibility of having telephones
in every room is being con-
sidered but it not a high priority
and that he did not see it hap-
pening in the immediate future.
Junior senators Jim Thomas
and Mark Scott reported
telephone difficulties at Sid
Richardson Hall. They also
raised the possibility of the
Richardson switchboard
staying open until curfew. The

meeting
switchboard presently closes at
10 p.m. The telephonic
problems continue at that dorm
with only two pay telephones
existing in the entire building.
Nothing was resolved on this
matter but Sparks said he would
contact the proper personnel to
try to improve the situation at
Sid Richardson.
At the request of the yell
leaders and many up-
perclassmen the senate then
considered the extension of
initiation for freshmen. The
senators decided to wait until
next week to see if initiation
should be extended.
Next the senate considered a
method of paying for a student
government office secretary.
Neither an hourly wage nor a
scholarship was approved and
the senate tabled the matter
until their next meeting.
Billy Kirchner head yell
leader then addressed the
senate asking that the current
cheerleader vacancy not be
filled because the group was
working together very well as it
was now. The special election
that was authorized earlier to
fill the vacancy failed to turn up
any qualified entries.
