Friendship Offer
Needs Extending
By Bill Carruthers
This week something new and something strange
transpired. It was a totally new approach towards
encouraging school spirit and sportsmanship. It was a
step which Dr. Don Newbury felt was necessary and
timely.
The act was a letter. A simple letter from the office
of Dr. Newbury. It was a letter which would travel the
brief 80-mile distance that separates the rivals of so
many years.
The letter was sent to Hardin-Simmons' faculty
staff and student body. Enclosed in the letter was an
invitation for the entire campus to attend this
weekend's game against Howard Payne.
Dr. Newbury extended this invitation to
Hardin-Simmons to encourage the campus to bring
larger crowds.
Actions like this are needed as a sign of good
sportsmanship in this era where a good sport is almost
as rare as a beer commercial without a woman in a
bikini swimsuit.
The sportsmanship was displayed during the
Howard Payne homecoming game. Prior to the game
below in the end zone Howard Payne released blue and
gold balloons for the Jackets and red and white
balloons for McMurry.
It is Dr. Newbury's desire that this spirit will carry
over into basketball season and that it will be applied
both ways.
This is a positive step forward in relations with
fellow rivals yet it is not the only step that could be
taken. There are other measures which could be taken
in order to enhance relations.
Ticket sales are not saving the campus. We are not
making enough profits off the sale of tickets to merit
the price. Therefore at this juncture we should admit to
the fact that our true goal for sporting events is bring
about school spirit and good sportsmanship and a good
idea which could add to this atmosphere is not only
adding an invitation to other schools but by also adding
an invitation to Brownwood residents.
This addition is sure to bring added interest to the
HPU sports program. From this addition the benefits
could be endless. The can drives that are held could
bring in record amounts for the homeless and hungry.
Brownwood High and other area high school students
could see and get a feel for the Howard Payne campus
and thusly enroll. Other benefits could include the
possible donations to the sports programs.
Although it oqly started as a concise letter that had
to travel a minimum distance it could turn into the letter
that started the rise of HPU's sports program and
opened a new dimension to TIAA competition.

Devotional
BY CONNIE HAYNES
"And when you pray you must not be like
the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray
in the synagogues and at the street coiners that
they may be seen by men. Truly I say to
you they have received their reward" (Matthew
6:5).
COMFORT FOUND
"They have their reward"
I heard You say
of those who seek earthly pleasures and pride.
"Vanity of vanities"
I was reminded of Solomon's words
and my heart cried out from deep inside;
Because I knew such things
would only leave me empty.
Such things alone would be despised.
But You said "Blessed are those who hunger
and thirst for righteousness
for they shall be satisfied."
"As a hart longs for flowing streams
so longs my heart for thee O God"
David cried so many ages ago.
And I know just how he felt
because I too have tasted the truth
and there is just no substitute I know.
You spoke once
of a living water
that would never leave any thirstiness in my
soul.
Oh Lord what a perfect description
for my limited understanding!
What a perfect glory I shall someday behold!
And in the here and now
I will hold Your hand
and You will be my God
You will be my Shepherd
and will lead me beside the still'waters.
And I will be comforted by Your staff and rod.
