Puppets Course Being Offered in Spring
By Laura G. Coupland
An exciting new special studies
course will be offered this spring:
Puppets: Creative Communication
SPE 2309. Pepper Dill and Steve
Martell will be team teaching it.
Dill explained "This course will
basically stand on four legs. We will
deal with the theory of communication
using visual aids: puppets are visual
aids. Also we will cover operating
techniques application of puppetry
(how and where can puppets be used)
and technical support (how to support
using puppets through such things as
props sound lighting staging etc.)."
Dill and Martell both have a great
deal of experience in puppets. Both
were involved in large puppet ministries
in their churches.
Dill said "Since I've been out of the
youth group. I have started other puppet
groups in churches. I have worked
regularly with puppets for 18 years
now."
Martell explained "My church at its
height had four puppet teams and over
100 puppets. We performed not only in
the churches but also in the schools and
malls."
"I worked for a year with the
company that used to be located in San
Diego Ca but has moved to DeSoto
TX called Puppet Producitons" said
Martell. "They are probably the
foremost puppet manufacturer in the
country. I traveled all over the United
States giving a condensed version of
what we will be doing in this class."
Because of the high retention factor
of visual aids puppets arc a great way
to communicate. "Although most
people use them for children they can
be effectively used with adults" said
Dill. "From my experience adults retain
and learn as much if not more than
children do."
"Our applications in this department
are very broad. For example puppets
can be used in many fields of study such
as elementary education social
worksociology drama music therapy
and religious majors" explained Dill.
Martell added "I know a lady who is
a puppet therapist. She uses puppets to
communicate with children who are
terminally ill. The children are much
more likely to open up to a puppet than
to doctors nurses or even their own
family."
"Because of the nature of Howard
Payne I think it is important to offer a
puppet class for those who are involved
in church related activities" said
Martell. "Some training is needed so
that the ministry can be done
effectively."
Dill explained. "The reason we are
offering this class in the spring is for
those who would possibly be working
at churches in the summer. We are also
planning on offering it in the first
session of summer school for those
churches who might want to send their
puppet leader or start such a ministry in
their church."
"One of the things we are really
excited about is that Puppet Productions
is considering providing for us at their
cost what they call mini-puppets. If
this deal works out each student will
have a puppet. A small textbook a

supplement and the puppet will cost
around $40 about the same as a
textbook" explained Dill.
"Students will be exposed to writing
techniques of puppetry and will be
required to do an actual production
performance possibly in chapel" said
Martell.
"We are also planning to do some
performances in Heartland Mall and we
will take a field trip to DeSoto to
Puppet Productions" Martell said. "We
will see the facilities the puppets
actually being madeand the recording
studio where they record their music."
This class will cover basic and
advanced puppetry; therefore no prior
experience is needed.
Because the class will be limited to
20 people students are strongly advised
to sign up for the class during
preregistration.
Dill and Martell agreed "It promises
to be a fun class."
