The conference session will begin Sept. 10 with discussion on quail
management and related activities by Dr Fred Guthery with Caesar Kleberg Wildlife
Research Institute, who will speak on generating more quail seasons like 1992-93;
Enrique Guerra, a rancher in Linn, on habitat management; David Schuster, manager
of the Herradura Ranch in Cotulla, on his ranch's style of managing quail; Ronnie
Howard with the San Tomas Camp and Paul Montgomery with Riverview Farms in
Hamilton on supplementing quail hunting with other activities; and Walter Schiel, a
professional dog trainer and handler.
The afternoon session will involve management programs and activities.
Speakers include Dr Thomas C. Tacha with the Kleberg Institute and TPWD's Garry
Waggerman on the impact of food to breeding whitewings; Bart Ballard with the
Kleberg Institute and Tacha on sorghum management for waterfowl; Mike McMurray
with the Texas Department of Agriculture on ecosystem management with livestock;
Randy Simpson with Southwest Texas State University on deer breeding programs
and their myths and realities; TPWD's Ernie Davis on the Texas Big Game Awards
Program; and David Langford with the Texas Wildlife Association on conservation
education for children.
On Sept. 11, speakers will discuss the pros and cons of supplementation.
Speakers are Dr Eric Hellgren with the Kleberg Institute on mineral supplementation;
Dr Tim Fulbright with Texas A&M University-Kingsville on the myths of food plots; Dr
Gary Schwarz, a rancher in Starr County, on a landowner's perspective of food plots;
Dr Gary McBryde, Texas A&M-Kingsville, on the economics of food plots versus
supplemental feeding; Steve Nelle, USDA Soil Conservation Service, on annuals and
perennials in food plots; and Jerry Turrentine, USDA Soil Conservation Service, on
low cost seeding options with food plots.
Registration begins at 4 p.m. on. Sept. 9 in the lobby of the Econo Lodge Motel
and will continue at 7 a.m. on Sept. 10 at Texas A&I. Pre-registration is $30 and
registration at the door will cost $35. Rooms are available at the Econo Lodge, HoJo
