arrives for Lady Jackets

Alter a three year absence the
L.iih Jackets are returning to the
American Southwest Conference
tournament this weekend along with
Austin College. University of Dal-
las and Concordia.
The Lady Jackets used a ten
game winning streak to propel them
into the tournament as two of the
teams ahead of them helped out by
being ineligible because of schol-
uiship players.
Belore this weekend's tourna-
ment the Lady Jackets had a warm-
up against the two teams that are
ineligible. On Friday the Lady
Jackets traeled to Texas Lutheran
looking for some momentum going
into this ueekend's tournament.
Although each game was
close the Lady Jackets lost in three
names bv scores of 15- LvlOand
15-9
On Tuesday night the Lady
Jackets traeled to Schreiner and
came out with the same result of
close games but three losses.
According to coach Kim
Prater the recent losses can be a
little misleading because the teams'
focus has not been on the games
but rather on this weekend.
"The past few games have
been hard because when you know
you're in the tournament it can get
hard to focus because you're antici-
pating the upcoming tournament."
I'rater said.
As of now the Lady Jackets
still do not know who they will be
playing in the semifinal game on
Friday evening. Austin College and
the University of Dallas are play-
ing a tri-match today with Hendrix
College and the winner of the AC-
UD game will play I Ioward Payne.
The loser will play the host
Concordia later on Friday evening
with the winners playing Saturday
afternoon.
Concordia who has beaten
the Lady Jackets twice this season
is the host and favorite of the tour-
nament. According to coach Prater
the Lady Jackets are hoping for
another shot at them but the team
knows they have to win Friday first.
"It is kind of hard when you
want to play someone in the final

game because you don't know what
can happen." Prater said. "We may
not get to that championship game
but if we do we want to be playing
Concordia."
The Lady Jackets have yet to
play either of the teams they could
face on Friday but coach Prater is
going to the tri-match to scout and
both teams have been beaten by the
teams ahead of the Lady Jackets in
the Western Division.
"We don't know a whole lot
at all because we haven't played
them" Prater said. "We know they
lost to the top three teams and have
gone to four or five games against
teams we have beaten."

The New York Yankees beat their cross-town foes the New York Mets 4-1 in the 2000 World

Monday for the third time in a row the fourth in the past five years.
With baseball coming to an end other sports are starting to get into full swing. Hockey has
already started the 2000-2001 season. The Dallas Stars are undefeated at home at 4-0. This past

NBA starts with old
faces in new places

After a summer of players
and coaches switching teams the
National Basketball Association
started its new season Tuesday
night.
'The season starts with a lot
of players having switched teams
during the off-season.
Perhaps the biggest move
was made in New York where long
time Knick Patrick Fwing was
traded to the Seattle Supersonics.
In his Sonic debut Iiwing scored
only two points but grabbed 12
rebounds.
After being booed in Madi-
son Square Garden over the past
few years there were chants of 'we
want Ewing' heard from the crowd
on Tuesday night during the
Knicks' blowout loss to the 76ers.
Many more players moved
during the summer but two of the
top players went to the same team.
Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady
both signed with the Orlando
Magic during the off-season and
the moves have made the Magic
one of the teams to beat in the East-
ern Conference. On Tuesday night
McGrady scored 32 points in his
debut as part of the Magic. Hill
slowed by an ankle injury scored
nine.
In 'Texas the big move was
not a move at all. The San Antonio
Spurs were able to retain Tim
Duncan who two years ago was
named the NBA's most valuable
player.
I lis signing has people in San
Antonio thinking they have what it
takes to unseat the Los Angeles
Lakers as NBA champions.
In Dallas new owner Mark
Cuban has the town thinking play-
offs for the first time in a decade.
His approach has been to spend any
amount of money necessary to get
a playoff team in Dallas.
With all-star Michael Finley
and four rookies on the team the
Mavericks are hoping a little vet-
eran leadership can go a long way
in helping the rookies develop
quickly.
Houston made a big move
this summer when they acquired
Maurice Taylor as a free agent from
the Los Angeles Clippers. Along
with Taylor the Rockets also have
last year's co-rookie of the year
Steve Francis from Maryland.
