of n shadow upon his virtue fright-
med him thi virtue whose very
conciption wns too ixalted for thi
most of men
He was pursued relcntlcsslj by
his fate The unfeeling world would
not let him lose himself Though
he felt deep within his own being
that his honor wns unstained still
the circumstances of his leaving
the ship made his case inexplicable
to others
It was n happ chance that sent
him to the Malay jungle Hidden
there from the world he had an
opportunity to give of himself to
a primitive peopk asking no re-
ward for his service but their fi-
delity nnd confidence But again
fate caused unanswerable questions
to be asked Wh) could he not
have remained unmolested in his
service to the people who had re-
stored his spiritual poise? Why did
pirates happen into that particu-
lar plncc nt thnt particular time
nnd wh) did they betmy Jim's gen-
erosit) with slaughter of natives?
Again Jim was entnngled in a
wib that was not of his weaving

Thi traged) is not in his denth

iis of the girl whom he loved
blind to her tears
Jim was the victor the master
of his everlasting destiny Fate
thrust upon him inconceivable bur-
dens but it could not control his
spirit In his death we view at
last the absolute triumph of in-
dividual will over ruthless fate In
Ix)rd Jim's death we experience

Tho ACC Optimist
Finders Not Keepers
It was n story nbout two inches lonjr
buried in tho inner pap;cs of n newspaper.
Stones only two inches long aic often very
impoitnnt in their significance!
This one told of foui tribes of Indians
in Aii7x)nn who met in council this week nnd
decided to do nwn with tho sign of the swas-
tika in theii catalog of tubal designs
The chieftains of of the Hopis Apaches
Papagos and Navajos speaking foi the
mcmbcis of then tnlws renounced the
swastika n sign that has been used by the
Indians foi centimes because it too closely
icseniblcs tho official insignia of Na7ism
Henceforth no basket no blanket no
pottery or jewelry or anything these In-
dians make with their hnnds can contain the
sign of the swastikneven though It is their
loved ancestral symbol meaning "good luck".
But they're giving it up because they
don't like it to be confused with Hitlensm
This is significant in several ways.
It shows the feelings m the United
States which has been taken up even by the
Indians against the Germnn Reich nnd all it
stands for. It reflects the white man's think-
ing. He is reading the white man's literature
getting acquainted with his culture and keep-
ing in tune with his everyday thoughts by
reading the newspapcis
Whcthci he is wise in accepting the
white man's mows and taking action on them
in this thing is a matci open to question
Wc are supposed to bo a noutial nation but
it is true wc can not be entirely impartial in
out thoughts
We can not help but ftel that tho (In-
dians should have retained their symbol of
the swastika It was thens to begin with
Hitler was the purloiner but finders aren't
nlwnjs keepers".
Someday the swastika may quit flying
over Germany.
Spring Is Here!
Spring is here!
Wc may lie sticking oui necks out only
to get them frozen along about Eastci
holidays but
Spring is here anyway
The birds are wafting on wing and sing
ing then hearts out these cool mornings
Campus coeds aic casting soft looks at the
eds who back off and look askance at them
01 who gic an effeminate "Come-hither"
look depending on their Leap Year prospects
Spring is here !
Come March 20 or thereabouts will
come mid-semester exams too And that is
not so far down the calendar. Why did wa
mention it? That's one of the bad things
about spring. But why mention the bad
things when they're every bit of three weeks
off?
'Scuse us
Spring is here!
The long sleep of death closes our scars
and tho short sleep of life our wounds
What is sport to the cat is death to
the mouse.
