McM to Offer Math Courses
For 25 Teachers in Abilene
The McMurry Mathematics De-
partment under the head of Dr
Virgil Bottom will offer two
courses for teachers of mathe-
matics during the Fall term of
1963-64 in order to assist teach-
ers of mathematics in this area
to improve their proficiency and
to help them become acquainted
with the new math approach
One of the courses is for teach-
ers in the elementary grades and
the other for teachers in the sec-
ondary schools
The course for the elementary
teachers is mathematics 136 and
is basic mathematics The pur-
pose is to help teachers in the
elementary and junior high
schools to become familiar with
the new approaches to the teach-
ing of mathematics
The course will be taught
every Saturday morning during
the Fall semester from nine to
twelve beginning Saturday Sep-
tember 14 The enrollment of this
class will be limited to 25 teach
ers and no regular college stu-
dents will be enrolled in this
class There will be a general
emphasis on number systems and
arithmetic but in a modern set-
ting There will be a stress on
abstraction and logical structure
The first two hours of each
meeting will bo devoted to formal
course work and will cover such
material as number systems
properties of the natural num-
bers mathematical systems mod-
ular arithmetic inductive and de-
ductive reasoning sets and logic
elementary theorems and the

The third hour will be devoted
specifically to applying the above
material to the mathematics that
is now being taught in elemen-
tary and junior high schools
The possible text will be Ex-
tending Mathematics Understand-
ing by Osborn DeVault Boyd and
Houston There will be three
hours of college credit given for
the course
The tuition for the course will
be $51 00 plus a $2 50 registra-
tion fee However a scholarship
of $26 00 will be granted to all
teachers who are accepted for en-
rollment making the total cost
for the course $27 50
For the course in secondary
mathematics the same time en-
rollment purpose and tuition
holds true The possible text for
this course will be Introductory
College Mathematics by Patrick
Shanahan
The course will cover such ma-
terial as sets and algebra of sets
plane sets and geometry rela-
tions functions graphing alge-
bra of functions inverse func-
tions natural numbers integers
rational numbers decimals limits
and sequences real numbers rad-
icals exponents and logarithms
complex numbers algebra and
geometry of complex numbers
algebraic functions polynomials
and fundamental theorems trig-
onometric functions groups rings
and fields as time permits

those awards is the Harry Soli-
day Memorial Award given by
the boys social club Kiva for an
outstanding senior each year
The award was started in 1957
when Mr Soladay a Kiva Ex
was killed in action in the Ko-
rean War Since this time an
award has been set up to honor
an outstanding senior and to in-
stitute a memorial for one who
gave his life

Lowery wound up with a 96 85
average Carolyn Hunter was

that he lived three years on the
