Dear Tarleton Alumni and Friends,
Another great Homecoming! One of the biggest turnouts
ever with every decade and
every interest group
represented. After an initial
decision that it was too dry
to light the bonfire, Dr.
McCabe reconsidered and
the 75"h annual bonfire was
burned with more
enthusiasm than ever.
Unfortunately, although the
Texans played well and had
outstanding support from
students and alumni alike, they were unable to hold off
the Eastern New Mexico eleven and lost by 27-13. The
halftime ceremony was a winner however, capped off
with the crowning of Homecoming Queen Kristy
Savage. She and her court provided a touch of glamour
to a hot, dry day.
Fortunately, the loss of the game was the only thing about
the weekend that was a disappointment. This Centennial
Celebration Homecoming was very special for all of
us. From the Silver Taps Ceremony on Sunday, October
10 until the War Years Reunion Breakfast on Sunday,
October 17, the week was full of commemorative events.
Some highlights: the Memorial Ceremony for John
Tarleton on Tuesday afternoon; dedication of the
Centennial Time Capsule on Thursday; the bonfire onFriday; many, many receptions, lunches and celebrations
on Saturday prior to the football game. Saturday was
capped off with the Distinguished Alumni Dinner
followed by a dance at the Holiday Inn for all Tarleton
Exes. A truly great week.
A special congratulations to our Distinguished Alumni
Honorees: Dr. Sam Harrell'59, Distinguished Alumnus;
Mr. Robert Champion '84, Distinguished Young
Alumnus; Dr. Mary Jane Mingus, Distinguished Faculty;
Dr. Stuart Chilton, Distinguished Staff; and John
Tarleton, Distinguished Friend, accepted by Grady
Graves '23, Tarleton's oldest living graduate. These
awards highlighted our program on Saturday evening
and capped off a great day of reunions and celebrations.
An important date to put on your calendar: May 26,
2000, the date selected for the 11 ' Annual Clyde H.
Wells/TAA Golf Classic. This year the event will be
held in Granbury, Texas, at the Nutcracker Golf Course.
In 1999 we made over $21,000 on our tournament, which
is part of the revenue that allows us to provide the level
of support we do for the University. Please plan to
participate and fund a team if possible.
Look for us on the web at our new address! We are now
on our own site at www.tarletonalumni.org. Look us up
and give us your input. We want to provide you the
connectivity you want and need to retain your ties to
Tarleton. We will also provide merchandise, including
the Centennial Medallion, that commemorates your ties
to Tarleton and provides us with additional
revenue for our efforts. SEE YOU ON THE
WEB.
Remember, this is your association. The board
members are merely custodians and we need
your input to know if we are handling our duties
in an effective manner. Get involved, work with
us, help us make this association the best of its
kind.
