The Totem McMurry'H
yearbook garnered two first
places one second place aiul
one third place at last
weekend's Texas Intercol-
legiate Press Association
Convention for work done in
the 1978-79 Totem. The Gal-
leon McMurry's literary
magazine captured one
third place at the Convention
Tor an illustration in its Fall
1979 edition
Garry Phillips took first
place in the Color Photo
and Garry Phillips won a
third place for Picture Story.

judges said "Phillips has a
good range of action in his
photos nnd''does n
reasonably good job of pros-

of two clowns of which the
judges said "He got the best
color picture in this contest.
The color is good the subjects
are sharp and clear they are
properly lighted and the
composition 1b excellent."
Randy Stinnett took first
place for the Sport Copy in
Rnndy Stinnett
the yearbook. According to
the judges "He tells his
readers about the season bet-
ter than anyone else entered
in this category."
Bruco Unrue now work-
ing for the Abilene
Reporter-News won second
place for the opening section
copy in the 78-79 yearbook

and deserves recognition."
The Galleon won one third
place certificate with Clyde
Johnson's illustration
"Screaming Face" and
Sandy Whiteside's illustra-
tion entitled "Balloon" won
honorable mention.
The War Whoop itself won
no awards but received hon-
orable mention for Lynn
Rowe Reed's cartooning and
for a photograph by Andy
Martinez that was captioned
"Lookin' Good". Of Ma.
Reed's cartoons the judges
said "Overall there wercn
lot of would be artists and
cartoonists of a style that
borders on no style at all.

Dance-A-Thon
Scheduled
The McMurry Dance-a-Thon
is going to be held from
six p.m. Friday April 25
until six p.m. Saturday
April 26. Anyone interested
in participating in the event
the proceeds of which shall
go to the Muscular Dys-
trophy Association should
call the MSG office or drop by
the McMurry campus center
information desk and pick up
forms and details. The music
for the Dance-a-thon for-
mally called the "Movin'
McMarathon Superdance"
will be provided by KFMN
Radio.

Dead Week Upcoming

Please be reminded that
Dead Week is to be observed
the week of April 28 through
May 2. Please review the fol-
lowing statement from the
Faculty Handbook for
clarification about the con-
cept of Deud Week and in-
stitutional policies relating
to final examinations:
"The week before final ex-
aminations is considered
'dead' to extra burdens on
students (papers exams or
social affairs) and distrac-
tions preventing the con-
centration of students and
faculty on a final summation
and completion of the courses
of study in a semester. There-
fore during the five working
days before finals there
shall be (a) no final examina
tions (b) no social activities
(c) a minimum to no
academic testing (d) a
minimum to no athletic
events concerts tours or
other performance commit-
ments. Faculty are expected
to utilize the time set aside in
the week following 'dead
week' for final exams or for
other class activities of a cap-
stone nature summarizing
the particular course of
study; the conclusion of a
semester does not begin
until after the completion of
the final exam week. Faculty
are expected to check each
student's clearance card be-
fore permitting the student
to take the final examina-
tion; it is the responsibility of
the student to obtain the
clearance cord from the Bus-
iness Office and to bring it to
the final examination
period."
