McMurry students' awareness questioned
Dear Editor
I have a few concerns that have been on my mind which I
would like to express in the War Whoop. Specifically they
regard the Joint Intcrclub the cafeteria and the overall aware-
ness of the McMurry student. Obviously these issues arc not
interrelated and therefore I shall not treat them as such.
First of all Joint Intcrclub seems to have a small yet devas-
tating weakness inits bylaws. Jointlntcrclubhasmctatlcastfour
times this semester and not once has it been able to carry out
business of any kind because a quorum has not bccnprcscnt. The
members have not been able to elect a secretary and they
technically couldn't even dissolve the body to start over since
this would require a vote. Here the primary governing body of
the social clubs on campus is disabled and floundering due to a
weakness in the hull. Something must be doncl Excuses have
been made concerning lack of communication to the clubs about
meeting times. Well let me say that communication cannot be
restricted to sending out reminders to club boxes especially at
McMurry with this type of an organization! When attendance is
required of 1 1 out of 13 clubs letters should be sent out early
phone calls should be made and person to person reminding
should take placet Isn't it worth the effort? Need I remind each
social club that if this Joint Intcrclub body fails or proves
ineffective authority and disciplinary action will be removed
from our hands once again. I say it is worth the extra effort!
Secondly I have been disappointed lately about the cafeteria.
I have heard students faculty administration and alumni rave
about our new building. The new cafe is a wonderful addition
and the atmosphere is a monumental improvement. However
you can't cat the atmosphere or the new building. Recognizing
that a new building docs not assure perfection or satisfaction I
feel it is time to voice some constructive criticism. A former
student visiting during Homecoming mentioned to me that the
cafe looked terrific but "the food looks just the some as last
year." I was also disturbed to hear a cafeteria official describe the
menu selection system as a guessing game: "I serve casseroles
one day and no one cats any and another day I serve less
casseroles and wc run out.Ijustcan'tfigurc out what you all want
to cat." I have a suggestion. Set up a chart of all the entrees that
you serve detailed to the very type of casserole or sandwich.
Keep a running record of how much is made and how much is
eaten. In this way you can sec what the McMurry community
likes and you can get rid of the foods Uiat the McMurry commu-
nity dislikes. Believe it or not similar to the way a church
congregation has a particular taste in hymns McMurry students
have a certain taste in food. It is the job of the cafeteria workers
to discern what that taste is. Obviously surveys and verbal
complaining have not helped. Maybe this suggestion will. I also
wish to follow up on a promise or should I say a sales pitch that
was given the students last semester that has not been followed
up on. One of the big additions to the cafe was a big grill. I
understand now that the grill is rarely used because it is so
ALF members publicly sought
Dear Editor
After reading the MSO minutes concerning a lone student
with the responsibility of rc-crccting a tipi after seeing the
handfull of students and faculty who showed up for the issues on
the presidential campaign and upon remembering the too small
number of students who make 8 a.m. classes at 8 a.m. I've
decided to come out of the closet
Several of us at McMurry arc members of ALF. Yes I am a
devotee of ALF. Since the semester began we have lost too many
members for me to remain silent It's time to go public and
actively recruit new blood before wc vanish. If you arc interested
in life membership in ALF (Alivcncss Liberation Front) you can
successfully complete pledging by doing five of the following
each semester. (The first selection of five makes you a member.
By alternating experience areas you achieve life membership.
Certain activities may become a habit and thus qualify you for
leadership in ALF). Take an interest in ideas and books. Go to
ball games and yell your head off. Have an intelligent argument
willi a prof. Attend MSO or other student functions. Go to all the
theatre presentations (or a mix of theatre and visiting lecturers).
Have dates. Sign up for a course that is reputed to be "tough."
Kiss somebody romantically. Participate in sports. Read a
newspaper every day. Create something (a song a quilt a
doghouse it doesn't matter as long as you do something that
expresses your being and shows that you arc made in the image

your faults to an intimate friend. Help somebody. Do all home-
work assignments for a semester with the sense of privilege that
makes learning a joy and excellence its own reward. Flirt. Make
your own list that might be better than this one. Most impor-
tantly don't do anything that kills you. Kick the habit of
deadnessl Join ALF!

The War Whoop 30 years ago
BY DEBORAH CANNON
Winter winds were in the air as the final issue of the War
Whoop hit the presses and students were preparing themselves
for the end of the semester.
Activities were still going on the highlight of which was a
concert by the famed vocal-instrumental group "Four Frcsh-
man."Thc group sang some of their biggest hits during the 2 hour
concert and helped to raise over $300 for the junior class.
Elsewhere on campus the Kappa Phi social club was busy
celebrating their nineteenth birthday and I.H.R. was beginning a
drive to collect toys for the state school.
In academic club news the formerly know "Die Dcutschcn
Indianer" (the gcrman indians) were being reorganized. The
club sponsored by the german professor Mrs. Felix Rosscr was
still deciding yupon a name at the time of their annouccmnct of
reorganization.
In sports the basketball season opened to a disappointing loss
over the North Texas State Eagles. The Indians fought long and
hard but a final score 113-183 showed they had a longer journey
ahead of them before victory.
All-City and Ail-American positions were being named and
McMurry athletes were being honored for their outstanding
performances. The Abilene RcportcrNcws announced its choice
for their All-City team. Four Indians; Ernie Davis Tommy
McAdams Charles Baldwin and Charlie Davis were placed on
the All-Star unit.
Charles Davis was honored again when the announcement
come that he was named to the All-Amcrican Methodist Univer-
sity and College team and to the Associated Press Little Press
College All-Amcrican for 1958.
In intramurals the games were winding down with Kappa Phi
and Delta Beta tied for first and T.I.P. second in the women's
division and Kiva leading in the men's.
As we come to the last issues of the 1988 and 1958 War
Whoops we find the most common clement between the two
generations the fact that "it's that time of year again!" Exams
papers and homework we've put off since September arc now
staring us in the face and the only numbers wc seem to see are
those that look like our G.P.A. - rather what wc hoped our
averages would look like by this point. So in order to save this
writer from the "fatal phone call" to parents trying to explain why
a social life was seemingly more important than school this
semester's column will come to aclose and the school books will
open. See ya back in 1959 when 1989 begins.
difficult to clean. I personally feel that more grilled food would
be a welcome addition to the food variety and quality: grilled
burgers grilled hotdogs grilled chicken grilled cheese sand-
wiches grilled steak (more often) etc. Money was not spent on
that grill to have it just sit there. Let's use it!
Lastly I have a criticism of the McMurry student body in
general. I look around campus and sec many professional
respectable appearing students walking to and fro. However at
the same time I sec that these same students have their brains
somewhere out in left field. On the McMurry campus wc have
a tremendous faculty involved and dynamic. Wc have world
renowned scholars educators and theologians visiting our
campus and speaking. Wc have organizations and honors classes
giving political presentations and holding political forums.
McMurry student participation in the events however is sadly
lacking. I give you two examples: At the in-depth political forum
sponsored by McMurry Christian Ministries approximately 30
persons were in attendance; less than half were students. Sec-
ondly at the political presentation given by the elections honors
class covering the candidates and the issues only three students
outside of those giving the presentations were in attendance. It is
sad to me that College Scries credit is the only thing that will drag
many students to any kind of activity. People tremendous
opportunities arc staring you right in the facc.Don't miss them
because you were sitting in your room drinking a cola.
Sincerely
Lance Shulcr
