Bears Shutout Pirates, 26-0,
To Maintain District Lead
by Charles Sullivan
The West Oso Bears solidified
their playoff chances with a 26-0 win
over the Mathis Pirates, Friday
night at West Oso.
The loss was the second district
defeat in as many weeks for the
Pirates, now 3-2 and 5-2 for the
season, while the Bears, 5-0 in
district and 6-1 for the season, con-
tinued to share the conference lead
with George West.
The two co-leaders will meet this
week to settle the top spot, while the
Pirates are left in a must-win situa-
tion the next two weeks if they are to
make their first playoff appearance
in 16 years.
The Bears rang up a pair of
touchdowns in a span of 1:18 of the
second period to take a 13-0 halftime
lead and added a pair of insurance
TDs in the fourth quarter to secure
their fifth win of the district cam-
paign.
Quarterback Hermie Thomas ran
for three touchdowns, with Brian
Green’s 61-yard punt return accoun-
ting for the other.
The first quarter was a defensive
standoff, with each team punting
three times. The West Oso offense
totaled only 34 yards, while Mathis
was held to 15 first-period yards.
The Bears’ initial score came on
their second possession of the second
period. They assumed possession of
the pigskin on the Pirate 44, follow-
ing a 31-yard punt.
Halfback Mark Thompson started
the drive with gains of nine and eight
yards and a first down at the Pirate
27. Two plays later, Thomas hit tight
end Eric Ellison with a 21-yard pass
that carried to the Mathis six.
An offside penalty backed the
Bears up to the Pirate 11, but
Thomas got eight yards on first
down and came back on third down
to go the final two yards for the
score.
Ronald Jackson’s extra point
make the score 7-0, with 3:54 left in
the first half.
Following the kickoff, the Pirates
failed to make a first down and Sean
Orsak punted 37 yards to Green on
the West Oso 39. The senior split end
made a move in the middle of the
field and headed up the right
sideline, where he found a wall of
blockers, and outran the pursuit to
make the score 13-0 with 2:36 re-
maining in the second period.
Jackson’s PAT try was blocked,
but recovered by the Bears for an
apparent two-pointer. However,
after Pirate head coach Tim Owen
consulted with the officials, the
points were denied.
The Pirates took the second half
kickoff at their own 15 and moved to
the 35, with the aid of a personal foul
penalty against the Bears. However,
the drive stalled at that point, forc-
ing a Pirate punt.
Neither team was able to move the
ball during the third quarter, as the
Pirates had only 20 yards total of-
fense and the Bears managed only
17.
An Ernest Gonzales interception
gave the Pirates the ball late in the
third quarter at their own 20.
However, three plays later, on the
first snap of the fourth period, the
Bears recovered a Pirate fumble on
the Mathis 15.
Thomas picked up four yards on
first down, followed by a 10-yard
gain by Fabian Gomez. With a first
and goal on the one, Thomas slipped
in on the third play of the possession.
Jackson’s kick was good, giving
the Bears a 20-0 lead with 10:43 left
in the game.
As in the first half, the Pirate of-
fense could not manage a first down
following the kickoff, and the Bears
got the pigskin back at the Mathis 42.
On the fifth play of the possession,
Thomas slipped in from the seven,

with the game’s final score.
Jackson provided the big play of
the drive, with a 23-yard romp to the
Pirate nine. Thomas scored two
plays later.
Again, Jackson’s kick was block-
ed, leaving the score 26-0 with 6:52 to
play.
Each team had one final posses-
sion of the game, but neither squad
was able to mount a threatening
drive.
The Pirate defense gave up 167
yards rushing and 193 total yards,
while intercepting a pair of West Oso
passes. Gonzales and Robert Leija
accounted for the Pirate intercep-
tions, bringing the defensive unit’s
total to 11 for the season.
Jackson was the Bears’ leading
rusher with 58 yards on nine carries,
while Thomas and Thompson gained
45 and 30 yards, respectively, on
nine carries apiece.
Judd Luce led the Pirate rushers
with 42 yards in 12 carries. Michael
Perez added 19 yards on seven car-
ries and Danny Tamez had 10 yards
in six rushing attempts.
Defensively, linebacker Sabas En-
cinia was in on 14 tackles, one for a
loss of yardage and free safety
Ernest Gonzales registered nine
tackles and one interception.
Rover Danny Tamez had 13
tackles, including four unassisted,
while linebacker Randy Sikes had 11
tackles, three unassisted, and tackle
Robert Knight had four unassisted
takedowns among 11 tackles.
Tackles Mitch Shedd and Jaime
Weatherby had eight and six
tackles, respectively.

Pirate JV Clubs Bears,
Freshmen Clip Pettus JV
The Pirate JV and freshmen
gridsters added a victory to their
season records last week.
The JV took a 30-12 win over WTest
Oso, improving their record to 5-1,
while the Pirate freshmen won for
the third consecutive week,
defeating the Pettus JV, 18-6.
In the JV contest, the Bears were
first on the scoreboard, with a 25-
yard touchdown in the first quarter.
The conversion attempt failed.
The Pirates answered with a five-
yard run by Michael Mandel.
Mandel set the score up with a 58-
yard run and added the two-point
conversion following the TD.
West Oso went back in front late in
the second quarter, taking a Pirate
turnover and marching 40 yards for
a score. Again the PAT failed, leav-
ing the score 12-8.
The Pirates added a second-period
touchdown, on a 38-yard pass from
Jessie Figueroa to John Johnson.
The extra point attempt was unsuc-
cessful, leaving the Pirates in the
lead, 14-12. at halftime.
'Hounds—

will both see action. Sophomore
James Boales (130) will be the star-
ting slot back.
’Hound head coach Rick West has
stacked his defensive unit with plen-
ty of size. Senior linebacker George
McKinney (210) is the leader of the
Taft defense. He is aggressive and
goes to the ball very well.
Kenric Griffin (170, sr.) is at the
other inside linebacking slot, while
junior Albert Hinojosa (195) will also
see some action at linebacker.
Nose guard Anthony McKinney
(155, jr.) is probably the ’Hounds
best defensive lineman. However,
sophomore end Michael Pollard
(195) is also a good one and is pro-
bably the best pass rusher.
Also in the line are tackles Roland
Alvarado (210, sr.) and Rudy Gon-
zales (195, sr.) and end Richard
Holland.

through after school practices.
Coach Barbara Garcia reports
seven letter winners returning from
last year’s playoff team, including
two full-time starters and one part-
time starter.
Karen Oliver and Melissa Franco
were starters a year ago, while
Yvonne Vela was a part-time starter
and was particularly effective as
Garcia’s first replacement off the
bench.
Garcia reported 11 prospective
varsity members the first week of
practice, with approximately 30
hopefuls for the three Lady Pirate
teams.
The Lady Pirates will open their
season Nov. 14, hosting the Corpus
Christi Moody Lady Trojans.
The second half was all Pirates, as
they added a 28-yard TD run by
Mandel and a 40-yard run by David
Aguilar, as well as a 25-yard field
goal by Figueroa.
The Pirate freshmen took an 18-6
win over the Pettus Eagle JV,
Thursday night, improving their
season record to 3-4.
The Pirates opened the scoring
with a 57-yard run by Danny Her-
rera in the first period.
In the second quarter, Herrera
teamed up with Herman Avila for a
37-yard touchdown, giving the
Pirates a 12-0 lead.
The Eagles only score came on a
46-yard pass and run play that cut
the Pirate lead to 12-6.
However, a 12-yard run by Avila
on the Statue of Liberty play added
an insurance TD for the Pirates.
This evening (Thursday) both
teams will be on the road, as the JV
plays at Taft and the freshmen will
play at Sinton. Both games will have
5:30 p.m. kickoffs.
In the defensive secondary, the
’Hounds will have Noel Molina (160,
jr.) and Robert Trevino (140, sr.) at
cornerbacks and Margarito Nieto
(135, jr.) and Rios at safeties.
Keys for the Pirates will be ball
control on offense and not giving up
the big play to Benford or one of his
teammates on defense.
The Pirates have had some
outstanding defensive play of their
own this season, as they have held
the opposition to an average of 162
yards total offense per game, 88
yards rushing and 74 yards passing.
In addition, no individual has rush-
ed for 100 yards against them and
only three of seven teams have
broken the century barrier. Oppos-
ing rushers have been limited to an
average of 2.6 yards per carry
throughout the season.
The Pirate defense has come up
with 19 enemy turnovers, 11 pass in-
terceptions and eight fumble
recoveries, as well.
Offensively, the Pirates have
averaged 223 yards per game, in-
cluding 165 yards per game on the
ground.
Their rushing attack has been
spread out over five primary ball
carriers, with halfback Michael
Perez the leader with 288 yards and
a 4.6 yard per carry average.
Quarterback Robert Leija has
rushed for 251 yards, averaging 2.8
yards per attempt, while Mitch
Shedd has a 4.0 yard average and 183
total yards.
Judd Luce, with 181 total yards,
has the highest per carry average,
at 5.3 yards, while Danny Tamez has
gained 170 yards and averaged 3.6
yards per rush.
In the passing department, junior
Robert Lopez is the leading
receiver, with eight catches for 206
yards and a pair of touchdowns.
However, Lopez is a doubtful per-
former Friday night because of a
knee injury. Senior split end Rigo
Bordayo has seven grabs for 142
yards and three TDs.
Friday’s match-up will kickoff at 8
p.m. at Pirate Stadium, with the
winner still a mathematical
possibility for a playoff spot. The
loser will be eliminated from any
playoff contention.
District
XC Meet
Saturday
The District 30-3A Cross Country

varsity boys will run at 10 a.m.,
followed by the junior varsity girls.
Last weekend, the Lady Pirate JV
placed sixth at the Corpus Christi
Carroll meet, run at CCSU.
Anna De La Rosa led the Lady
Pirates, finishing 11th, followed by
Yvonne Flores (20th), Lisa Morin
(32nd), Ruby Gonzalez (37th) and
Mary Ann Desmond (72nd).
In the varsity division, Sylvia
Salinas placed 28th, with a 13:48
clocking for the course.
San Pat
Soccer
Results
The San Pat Soccer Association
held two days of matches last
weekend at Rob and Bessie Welder
Park in Sinton.
In Saturday’s action, the Western
Auto Dynamites took a Division II
win over the Tigers, 3-2, as Dereck
Saldivar scored all three goals for
the Dynamites.
Also in Division II, the Nelco
Distributing Co. Cobras shutout the
Lions, 9-0. Chase Sugarek scored six
goals for the Corbras, with Richard
Nelson scoring two and Mitchel
Smolik one.
The Five Points Quick Stop
Hornets broke into the win column in
Division III, with a 1-0 squeaker over
the Owls. Sam Webb scored the only
goal of the match.
The Big 6 Products Volcanoes
came out on the short end of a 2-0
score, losing to the Bullets in more
Division III action.
In Division IV play, Joe’s Mobile
Home Service’s Goalbusters clipped
the Cosmos, 4-2, as Robert Mendoza
and Gage Aguilar netted two goals
each.
The City Lumber Little Dribblers
continued to lead Division I, with a 2-
0 victory over the Wildcats. Jerod
Hickle and Jason Padron accounted
for the Little Dribbler goals.
In Sunday’s Divison II action, the
Cobras beat the Tigers, 3-2, with
Chase Sugarek accounting for all
three Cobra goals.
The Dynamites held on to their
divisonal lead with a 2-1 victory over
the Hurricanes. Dereck Saldivar
netted both goals for the Dynamites.
In Division III, the Volcanoes edg-
ed the Hornets, 1-0, with Joseph Soto
scoring the match’s only goal.
Question—
Continued from Page 7
the runner-up playoff berth.
Sinton’s win over Aransas Pass
was as important to Mathis and Taft
as it was to the Pirates. Not only did
they knock the Panthers out of any
hope of a playoff spot, they opened
the door for all four of the remaining
contenders to be somewhat in con-
trol of their own destiny.
To sum up the playoff
possibilities:
The winner of the West Oso-
George West contest is the district
champ, and the loser must win one
their last two games to be assured of
a playoff spot.
Mathis and Taft must win both of
their two remaining regular season
games to have a chance at the
runner-up spot. Add to that scenario,
for Mathis to advance to the
playoffs, West Oso must beat George
West this week and they must win
their last two games. Should George
West defeat West Oso, two Pirates
victories leave them tied for second
place with West Oso, who would ad-
vance by virtue of a victory in head-
to-head competition.
While Taft must also win their last
two games, they need a George West
victory this weekend to have a shot
at the runner-up berth. A West Oso
win over George West leaves the
’Hounds out of the running by virtue
of their loss to the ’Horns.
Should George West and West Oso
tie, all this figuring has been for
naught, as they would both advance
as co-champs, with statistics in their
game deciding the champion and
runner-up positions in the playoff
brackets.
The district race could be no more
exciting, had it been scripted by a
Hollywood writer. With two weeks to
go, four teams are still alive and in
position for a trip to the state
playoffs.
Besides the title game at George
West, this week’s action has Taft at
Mathis in a game of equal impor-
tance, while Sinton travels to Odem
and Ingleside hosts Aransas Pass.
