McMurry WAR WHOOP Feb. 23 1990
ISSUES FORUM PAGE
Q. What role should
I think social clubs are vital
to the college atmosphere
because it keeps people
from going nutty while
working on their studies; it
give collegiate men and
women something to look
forward to each week be-
sides tests speeches and
research papers. The
pledge season is another
story though in terms of
the noise level.
John Starbuck
I think they shouldn't be so
stressedl I mean you
shouldn't have to join one
to fit in and have fun! If one
wants to be in a club that's
fine; but it seems like
people are looked down
upon when they don't join
one and I don't think that's
right.
Lori McCoy
Social clubs should not be
as important as they are.
They have a certain role
on campus but I belive that
there is too much empha-
sis placed on membership.
McMurry stresses Individu-
alism and most clubs place
the group above the indi-
vidual. Kathy Miranda

and transition. This is a
I believe Social Clubs
should function to enhance
campus life and provide oppor-
tunities for making lasting
friends. I believe Social Clubs
should be responsible for work-
ing together with the common
goal of a better McMurry Col-
lege. I believe Social Clubs
should be held accountable for
any and all actions token by their
membership. I believe Social
Clubs should allow freedom of
expression freedom of speech
and equal opportunities but who
cares what I think?
The sad truth of the matter
is that Social Clubs presently
time of unstableness.
Social clubs help people to
find a base a place from
which they can grow and
develop self-esteem. At
McMurry however social
clubs tend to have more of
a negative influence than
one that is positive. This
can be seen all over cam-
pus. Student Government
has representatives from
only afewclubs and those
that are appointed tend to
be from the same social
cluborfromclubsthat Inter-
act frequently. The
McMurry cafeteria is an-
other example. Certain
clubs sit at certain tables
almost to the point of being
exclusive of new or non-
member students. During
Spring Rush members
become "best friends" with
potential pledges once the
rushees decide on a club
some of those 'test friends'
suddenly although not
surprisingly diminish.
Most people involved with
a social club directly or
indirectly could attest to
this but probably won't due
to pride and allegiance. It's
difficulttogrowwhenyou're
limited to a group that has
the same thoughts and
ideas that you do. Our
social clubs need to
reevaluate their relation-
ship to the campus and its

deteriorate all the aspects men-
tioned above. Look around
campus sometime! We arc di-
vided into groups and clicks
based on Social Club member-
ship. This terribly narrows our
views and limits our experiences
to a small homogeneous group.
If variety is the spice of life
Social Club members arc at best
unseasoned.
Also Social Clubs do not
enhance McMurry College
rather they result in "tattle-tales"
and "hypocrites". Some Social
Clubs arc so concerned with other
clubs' illegal activity that they
place themselves next to God
and just can't wait to pass judge
social clubs play at

the college and its future
students.

Social clubs play 'loo big"
of a role at McMurry. It is
just like high school again.

put down in childish ways
for hanging around with
"other people" who are in a
different club than yourself
or no club at all. You should
not be resented for your
choice of friends or social
clubs. Social clubs at
McMurry just split up prior
friendships and it makes

For some strange reason
being in a social club
seems to give some people

Finally Social Clubs cre-
ate tension and even hatred be-
tween people who don't even
know one another. If tills is what
these clubs arc all about I don't
want any part of it. However I
am a part of it; yet I know this is
not the purpose of Social Clubs.
People and circumstances get
twisted and the result is often
antisocial. These are not bad
