Dedication Services Held
For Skidmore Mission
Dedication services for Mission
Bautista La Hermosa in Skidmore
were held Saturday, March 26, with
approximately 200 persons atten-
ding.
Dr. Joanne Legette and Rev.
Claude Jacks, Jr. delivered the
words of dedication, with Rev. Dorso
Maciel delivering the dedication ser-
mon.
Baptist work among the Spanish-
speaking people of Skidmore began
in 1978 with an adult class conducted
by Rev. Noe Ortiz at the First Bap-
tist Church.
In 1980, the class formed into a
department of Sunday School, with
Spanish services led by Candido
Gonzales, a Deacon of the church.
The Mission was founded in
September 1985, sponsored by
Primera Iglesia Bautista of Mathis.
The Mission had already acquired
an acre of land and, in November
1986, Jack Green of the South Texas
Children’s Home informed the Mis-
sion of a house TCH was willing to
donate to be used as a church

In October 1987, the house was
moved to its present site in Skid-
more and, the following month, work
crews began repairing and restoring
the structure on Tuesday evenings
and Saturdays. The congregation,
which is now headed by Pastor San-
tos Gaitan, began with only eight
members, but has now grown to 52.

In addition, a professional
physical examination of the breast is
recommended every three years for
women 20 to 40, and every year for
those over 40. ACS also urges all
women over the age of 20 to examine
their own breasts monthly.
“We hope to dispel women’s fears
about breast cancer,” Mrs. Strunk
added. “Although it is the most com-
mon type of cancer among women, it
doesn’t have to kill them. ”
