New coach brings fresh
hopes for McM tennis teams
McMurry baseball team practices at Driggers Field in preperation for
their first game this Friday against Lubbock Christian University.

University men's and
women's track teams con-
tinued their early season
success by qualifying four
more athletes to the Na-
tional Meet. After only two
indoor meets the Indians
and Lady Indians have seen
some familiar athletes con-
tinue their quest for national
championships with provi-
sional qualifying standards
in their respective events.
Darcell Edwards
looking to build on her out-
door national championship
in the triple jump provision-
ally qualified with a jump of
37-1. Her jump was good
enough for fourth place. She
also jumped her way to the
national meet in the long
jump with a qualifying
mark of 18-2 to earn third
place among a host of Divi-
sion I and II competitors.
Freshman standout
Michelle R.ig.in continued
her domination at the Divi-
sion HI lecl by provision-
ally qualifying in (he shot
put in only her second col-
legiate track meet. Jerrod
Cook added to McMurry's
strong field event qualifiers
by throwing the weight
throw a school record 151-
4 to provisionally qualify.
The Indian and
Lady Indian recent qualifi-
ers join provisional qualifi-
ers Talitha Belcher in the
55m sprint and Joe Poonnan
in the 55 hurdles both of
whom are returning All-
American's. The McMurry
University men's and
women's indoor track team
keep qualifying athletes for
the 2002 NCAA Division III
National Championships to
be held at Ohio Northern in
Ada OH. At OCU three
more athletes qualified.
Kelly Brown Cheyenne
Oldham and Adrienne
Kerbow all provisionally
qualified in their respected
events. Brown ran a 59.51
in the 400 meter dash
Oldham leaped 10'6" in the
pole vault and Kerbow re-
corded a lime of 8.65 in the
55 meter hurdles.
McMurry now has
eight women and two men
provisionally qualified for
Nationals. For the women

Men's & Women's Swim-
ming The McMurry
University men's and
women's swimming team
competed at the last Invita-
tional of the year as both
teams get ready for the con-
ference meet. It was the
strongest overall showing
for the men this season as
they went up against peren-
nial power' Trinity Univer-
sity amongst other division
II and III schools.
The Indians scored
815.50 points to finish sec-
ond to Trinity who tallied
1284.50 points. The Lady
Indians finished in a re-
spectable fourth place with
232 points. The University
of North Texas won the
women's bracket with 1131
points. Trinity finished sec-
ond with 1048 points.
In their last meet
of the season before the con-
ference meet both the
McMurry University men's
and women's swimming
teams swam well against a
familiar conference oppo-
nent John Brown. The
McMurry men defeated
John Brown 149-121 and
while the women won 1 18-
96. Matt Broussard
once again led the Indians
with three first place fin-
ishes in the 100-yard back-
stroke (59.37) 100-yard
freestyle (50 92) and the 50-
yard freestyle (22.23).
Broussard won all three of
his events in convincing
fashion garnering big leads
over second place. Casey
Pacheco easily won the
men's 1650-yard freestyle
(20:15.02). Sean Young
won the 100-yard butterfly
(58.48) 500-yard freestyle
(5:07.99) and the 200-yard
freestyle (1:52.74). Ryan
Black followed that up with
a win in the 200-yard IM
(2:13.22). Michael Stuart
won his 200-yard back-
stroke event in 2:12.49.
Several women
took first place in their re-
spective events to lead the
Lady Indians. Jessica Luker
placed first in the 200-yard
freestyle in a time of
2:25.27. She also won the
1650-yard freestyle
(21:30.63). Megan Berger
won with a big margin in the
100-yard backstroke
(1:07.60) while also claim
ing a victory in the 1 00-yard
freestyle (59.64). Hillary
Pool continued her streak of
fine swimming heading into
the conference meet by tak-
ing first in the 100-yard
breaststroke (1:12.71).
Kimberly Griffin won the
500-yard freestyle in
6:05.35 and Candice
'league garnered first place
in the 50-yard freestyle
(27.09).
Men's Basketball
San Antonio na-
tive senior Thomas
Drakeford was given the
ASC-West "Player of the
Week" for the second time
this season. He helped the
Indians split a pair of games
against Texas Lutheran and
Schremer University.
Drakeford is now
just 96 points away from
1000 career points. He is
averaging 21.5 ppg and
only needs to average 1 3.4
ppg in the next seven
games. This is just his third
year at McMurry.
Nine lead changes
and 14 ties took place in the
cross town rival game as the
McMurry University Indi-
ans (14-46-2) held off an
improving Hardin-
Simmons University Cow-
boy (2-161-7) team 93-
87). Both teams shot 56
from the floor.
The McMurry
Uni veristy Indians ( 1 5-47-2)
put a swagger back into
their walk by deleting their
loss last week to Texas
Lutheran (8-1 14-4) with an
83-68 win in Kimbrell
Arena. This was the 20th
straight win in Kimbrell.
With both Concordia-Austin
and Mary Hardin-Baylor
losing (he Indians now
have sole possession of first
place in the ASC-West.
Forcing 39 turn-
overs and stealing 23 balls
the McMurry University In-
dians (16-48-2) extended
their winning streak at
home to 21 games with a
100-66 win over Schreiner
University (4-152-7). Five
players for McMurry scored
in double figures.
Senior center Kim
Maina has been voted onto
the D3Hoops.Com 'Team
of the Week" for last weeks
performances in three
games. This is the first na-
tional award received this
year by the Indians.
After taking a 22-
point lead at halftime the
McMurry University Indi-
ans (17-49-2) held off the

McMurry is enter-
ing a new era in the 2002
season in tennis with a new
coach Mark Hathorn. Mark
is entering his first year and
is the head jtircctor and pro-
fessional at Fairway Oaks.
Before coming to Abilene in
1 995 he coached at the Lake
Houston Country Club.
Hathorn played
college tennis at Abilene
Christian University from
1980-84 and was the 1
singles player and 1
doubles player in 1983 and
1984. He has been ranked in
state and nationally in jun-
iors college and adult
singles. He still enjoys com-
peting in state and national
tournaments and is looking
forward to the 40's this year.
Both the men's and
women's teams will have
new faces for the 2002 sea-
son. There will be 12 addi-
tions with eight of them be-
ing freshmen.

Thomas Drakeford put up
18 points to surpass the
1 000 point mark in his three
year career at McMurry.
Women's Basketball
Junior center
Corissa Thompson was
given McMurry's second
ASC-West "Player of the
Week" award for her perfor-
mance in wins over Texas
Lutheran and Schreiner.
Holly Potts received the
award earlier in the year.
Corissa became the
all-time career blocks leader
at McMurry with one block
at Texas Lutheran and then
captured the McM season
record for blocked shots
with four vs. Schreiner. She
now has 44 blocks on the
year and 84 in her career.
She is currently
ranked sixth in the nation in
blocked shots per game (3.0)
and is third in the nation in
performances for blocked
shots svith eight in one
game. She recorded eight
blocks in a double overtime
win over Centre College.

Simmons University Cow-
girls ( 18-08-0) showed why
they were top ranked when
they ran away with the
game 95-61 over the
McMurry University Lady
Indians (10-83-5). HSU
held McMurry to only 30
shooting from the floor.

men's and the women's
teams had improved years
from the 2000 season. The
men finished with a 6-10
record and a 3-4 record in

their mark in the ASC-West

year as Holly Potts and

the Week" and her and
Angie Head were named to
the Academic All-ASC

SRSU jumped out to an
early 21-4 lead in the first
seven minutes of the game
that McMurry could not
over come.
Men's & Women's Tennis
Head Coach Mark
Hathorn opened up his col-
legiate coaching career with
identical 2-1 records in the
first weekend of tennis com-
petition. Both of the teams
picked up wins over
Howard Payne and the Uni-
versity of Texas-Tyler.
