Vampire Weekend's debut a promising refreshing
take on pop music
By Sarah casselbtrry
Managing Editor
Here is a brief his-
tory of Vampire Weekend's
eponymous debut: four
Columbia grads get their
hands on some Afro-pop
albums take notes mix
in an indie rock vibe '6os
baroque pop clever lyrics
and record an album. An
indie rock classic is born.
Indie rock fans have
been drooling all over them-
selves in anticipation of
Vampire Weekend since the
quartet released an EP in
September 2007. The album
has a unique pretty and
deceptively simple sound
which is refreshing to hear
in an age when pop music
tends to be overproduced.
The band certainly is
not the first to borrow Afro-
pop and make it their own
(Paul Simon's Graceland)
but they make the transition
from Afro-pop to indie rock
smoothly and gracefully.
The Afro-pop sensibility in
the album is quite subtle;
on a first listen you prob-
ably would not even realize
where the inspiration for the
music came from. Where
Graceland smacks you
across the face with Afro-
pop Vampire Weekend taps
you on the shoulder.
"A-Punk" is definitely
the highlight of the album.

Mean Girls" on campus?
ByElyseHahne
Special Projects Editor
Spring and pledging
are in full swing now and
the repercussions of many
girls' pledging is also appar-
ent. Many non-pledges have
noticed a particular persona
that many of the pledges
have put on. This includes
being mean and tired hav-
ing no respect for others
and just acting different.
Now I am not saying
that all pledges have this
problem but it is apparent
that many of the sorority
pledges have changed for
the worse. Many pledges
do not realize that they are
being short in conversa-
tions or just rude.
Professor Layton and the Curious Village:
By Sarah Casselberry
Managing Editor
Those who argue there
are no redeeming or educa-
tional qualities to be found
in video games have never
played Professor Layton
and the Curious Village on
the Nintendo DS. Professor
Layton has a movie-like
quality smart storylines
and is perhaps the most
advanced game to be offered
on the DS.
An import from
Japan Professor Layton is
a series of mini games with
a few larger mysteries to be
solved. Each mini game is a
brainteaser but not easily
solvable. I was fooled into
thinking the brainteasers
would be easy and after I
spent thirty minutes on a
single puzzle I changed my
thinking.
The plot revolves
around Professor Layton
and his assistant Luke. The

It is a catchy song it has a
good beat and it has the per-
fect combination of baroque
sensibilities and indie rock.
It is the only song on the
album to which you can rock
out.
The comparisons
to fellow New York band
The Strokes are inevitable.
Indeed "Campus" sounds
like The Strokes and the
bass and drums in "I Stand
Corrected" sound almost
exactly like The Strokes'
"Reptilia" - so much so
that I wondered if Vampire
Weekend had actually sam-
pled the song.
I want to love this
An anonymous source
said that her roommate has
"changed her attitude to just
plain rude. She is short with
me always in a hurry and is
just mean around me now. I
want to move out it is that
bad."
Pledging is taking
its toll on the non-pledges.
Who wants to be around
someone who treats them
like dirt?
Another anonymous
source said "I wish I could
move out of my room now."
Her roommate is
pledging and treating her
like scum. No one deserves
to be treated poorly. So what
if someone is pledging?
They still should give every-
one the respect that they

duo has been invited to St.
Mystere by Lady Dahlia
who needs help in solving a
mystery. St. Mystere is full
of people who love riddles
and these people continu-
ally stop Professor layton
and Luke with a riddle or
two that needs to be solved.
What makes this game
so brilliant is that it is the
total package. The graph-
ics on this game are revo-
lutionary for a handheld
gaming system. The game
progresses like a movie and
the sound is fantastic. While
these qualities sound like
elements of more advanced
games like the Halo fran-
chise Professor Layton is
not intimidating. Any video
game neophyte would be
able to play this game with
ease.
The only negative com-
ment I have is that at times
it seemed I was going in
circles constantly revisiting
places I had already visited.
album I really do. It is such
a warm soothing listening
experience but I cannot
help getting a little bored
after the first five songs. I am
hoping Vampire Weekend
is an example of things to
come. I think of indie rock-
ers Arcade Fire and their
first album; it was critically
acclaimed but slow-moving
with only one song I liked.
The second album however
was stellar from start to fin-
ish with only one song I did
not like.
Here's hoping
Vampire Weekend will keep
making albums. BA-
deserve. What happened to
the Golden Rule?
Everyone wants to be
treated with respect and no
one deserves to be treated
like something on the floor.
So I ask you all to
look at how you treat one
another and especially if
you are pledging try to be
nice to those around you.
Remember that the stress
of pledging season can
affect the way you normally
behave. Try to get more sleep
and respect one another.
The non-pledges do
not have a problem with
pledging we just have a
problem with people treat-
ing other people badly for
no apparent reason.
Once I got used to the game
however and I understood
the underlying story plots
it all began to make sense.
Also the hunt for new
brainteasers is a source of
never-ending fun.
Gamers be warned:
Professor Layton is highly
addictive. The first night 1
began playing the game I
found that I had completed
the first chapter and almost
two hours had passed with-
out my even realizing it.
While Professor
Layton could be compared
to the other brain-training
brainteaser games like Brain
Aye the difference lies in the
fact that Professor Layton
has much more to offer with
over 130 puzzles.
When I first looked
at the cover for Professor
Layton 1 thought it was
going to be a cheesy child's
game but since I've started
playing I've never been dis-
appointed. A

We have reached the
point in the academic year
where students count the
days and drag their feet
from class to class I being

the half-way mark of the
spring semester the three-

year many find themselves
in a close to "burned-out"
state of mind and body.

in reaction to the close-to-frayed
mental and emotional
state of most everyone.
As of the date of pub-

three days of class before

We have to personal-
ize everything. How can I let
people know who I am with
my cell phone and my il'od?
Buy accessories. It is a little
weird that our cell phones
iPods and laptops wear
more jewelry than we do.
We are the "stuff

unnecessary products can
we accumulate without suf

It is not easy work-

little visible rewards or
encouragement. Instead
it is common to meet deri-

of the amount of effort that
is put into this publication.
The hard work of many tal-
ented and diligent individu-

With all the love and
time spent putting this pub-

hurts to hear people con-
stantly putting it down
whether jokingly saying that
mistakes are fine as no one
reads it anyway or com-
menting in all seriousness
on the lack of organization
and obvious journalistic
training evident.
Still I hear things and
try to take those things into
consideration as we con-
tinually strive to improve
and make better. It may
not happen overnight and
most probably will not but
it eventually will get there
(although where exactly
"there" is may be hard to
tell).
