penrance at Toyah.
The East Line road reaches Mc-
Kinney on Wednesday.
Night prowlers is what they
called professional burglars in
Waco.
There was a disastrous fire at
Pittsburg, Camp county, last Mon-
day night-
Wm. Burney, aged ten years,
was drowned, while swimming in
the bayou at Houston, on the
17th.
The Stonewall Greys, of El
Paso, have been sworn in, and are
now in the service of the state, as
militia.
A Mr. Holcomb and his horse,
residing near Rice, in Ellis coun-
ty, were struck and killed by light-
ning last week.
A Mexican woman named Jus-
ticia Habilla dropped dead, of
heart disease, in the street, at San
Antonio, on the 17th.
Coney White, a notorious char-
acter, was jailed in Galveston on
the 17th, for robbery of a pocket
book and contents from Mrs.
Kimley.
An altercation occurred in the
court room at San Antonio on the
17th, between Senator Houston
and J. R. Shook, Esq. Mo blood
was shed.
At Gordon, Palo Pinto county,
the coal mines are yielding daily
sixty tons of coal. New mines are
being opened and the yield will be
largely increased.
At Riverside, Tuesday evening,
two convicts made a break for
liberty. The guard fired on them ;
one was killed instantly and the
other slightly wounded.
Curly Yates, Dave Harshell and
Doc Davis, three bunko players,
were arrested at Ysleta, on the
16th, on suspicion of having rob-
bed a negro man on the T. & P.
train.
AtLovelady, a few days ago,
two negroes quarreled over their
dusky paramour, when one of
them decided the dispute by firing
a load of buck shot into his rival,
wounding him seriously, though
not fatally.
Otto Blankenfeldt, a respecta-
ble German of Houston, was ar-
rested Wednesday upon an affida-
v>t of Julius Wieser, agent for the
Winkelmeyer beer, for embezzling
8178. He was locked up in jail
to await a trial.

Gainesville Hesperian : Stage-
driver Jim Gilmore showed con-
siderable pluck Monday when at-
tacked by the robbers. He resist-
ed their solicitations as long as it
was politic to do so. It seems on-
ly one appeared at first to demand
his surrender, whom he lashed
with his whip till his mask fell off,
and then the other appeared on
the scene. At this reinforcement,
and two drawn revolvers leveled
upon him, he succumbed.
Marshall Herald: A stranger
stopped at the King house, in this
place, some three weeks ago, and
registered his name as Jasper
Haesler. He was sick when he
arrived, and has been getting
worse since, until death relieved
him of his suffering on Tuesday
last. Nothing could’be learned of
his relatives or connections, nor
as to his real home. While deliri-
ous he would speak of his wife
and children; “that his wife
was here and was taking his
money,” and such like wan-
derings. His trank was marked
“Mobile, Ala.’7 Hs was proven to
be an Odd Fellow, and received
all watchful care and attention at
the hands of the members of that
order in this place. He was a
member ot a lodge in Brooklyn,
N. Y., and that lodge duly recog-
nized the attention shown him by
his brethren here. He had con-
sumption, and was trying to go to
San Antonio with the hope of being
relieved. He was buried here yes-
terday by the Odd Fellows.
