It is not too late to say that that New
Year’s dinner at Mr. J. B. Massie’s was
colendid, the host hospitable, the young
ladies ’present entertaining and the young
gentlemen brave.
On the 23d ultimo Mr. Samuel Spears,
clerk of the court of Shackleford county,
Ws married to Miss Georgia McDean, of
this county. Now/ Sam, I admire your
choice, but it was rather impudent in you
to come into our county and pluck one of
our fairest daughters, when we have so
many marriageable young men ; but the
hrave deserve the lair.
The ball given by our citizens at the
courthouse on the night ot the 7th instant
was a most delightful affair. The dancing
began about dusk and continued until
daylight. There were present ladies and
gentlemen trom all parts of the county.
The supper was grand. Everything that
the heart or appetite could desire was to
he had, and that in abundance. Every
one present seemed to enjoy the pleasures
ot the occasion. Those who did not dance
spent the time very pleasantly in conver-
sation. It was one ot the most enjoyable
halls 1 ever had the pleasure of attend-
ing.
Uncle Charlie Sebastian has a bell punch
in full blast. It calls for beer only. Most
ot us would like to have something
stronger.
Our district court was in session three
days this week. Hon. T. B. Wheeler,
judge, and A. 11. Coleman, district attor-
ney, are makiog their first tour of the dis-
trict. Both gentlemen seemed to be well
qualified for their respective positions.
The grand jury found eight bills of in-
dictment, four of felonies and four of mis-
demeanors. The district attorney filed
one iniormation of aggravated assault;and
battery. A. Carson, who killed William
Bishop on the 6th of December last, was
indicted for murder. A special venire
■was summoned, but it was thought a jury
could not be had in this county, and, by
consent, the venue was changed to Shack-
leford county, and will be heard in May.
Washington Harris, colored, was indicted
lor theft of one head ot cattle. Who the
other lucky parties are is not known, as
they have not been arrested. The last
grand jury worked hard, considering the
bad weather and the disadvantages to
which they were subjected.
The county court, Judge Bartholomew
presiding, was In session this week lor
probate matters. The judge held the
wool-sack to its proper place with ease
and dignity.
Uncle Charley Sebastian is quite low
with cold in his lungs. I hope, however,
that he will soon be up and about again.
Attorneys J, N. Browning and J. R.
Davis, of Fort Griffin, J. L, L. McCall, of
Weatherford and M. D. Kent, ot Fort
Worth, were in attendance on our district
court.
Dr. 1. J, Culver and Captain of the
Echo, were in town this week.
We had a shoe-maker who could ham-
mer out five dollars clear each day, and
could have had work every day, but lie
liked whisky too well, spent his money
too freely for it, got in debt and skipped
the town. Now, who is the good, sober
mid industrious shoe-maker who would
like to live In the best town, in the best
county, in the best state, in the best gov-
ernment ot which I have any practical
knowledge, and make this money?
Ralph.
Throckmorton, Jan. 22. 1881.
A Content for $20.
A very interesting contest came ofi last
night at “My Theatre” for a twenty dol-
lar gold piece to be awarded to the best
performance of the following five trapeze
performers: Don Juan Zamora, Mons
A1 vara,Don J uanJohnson,Mons Elvira and
Miss Alma. All the artists appeared on
their respective bars at the same time and
fast music during the performance render-
ed the sene very exciting.
Manager Geo. B. Holland offered the
prize, which wa8 awarded by a disinter-
ested committee, chosen from the audi-
ence to Don Juan Zamora. Don is a
Mexican and is simply immense on the
bar. The house was crowded, and the
wildest and most enthusiastic applause
prevailed duringdhe wonderful perform-
ance.
Miss Alma, just leaving a sick bed, hav-
ing been under the treatment of Dr. Fields
for three days past, it has been decided
by the other contestants for the prize, to
repeat the tournament to night, she being
unable to do her act. She merely ap-
peared because she had been announced
as one of the contestants, and was really
unable to work ; consequently there was
in reality only four contestants. But on
to-night the prize will be awarded to
whom it justly belongs, thus concluding
the first trapeze tournament ever held in
the state of Texas. It
